There needs to be an Amsterdam to Milan night train... Or better yet. All the way to Rome.

One to Venice would be good too...

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@quixoticgeek Last Year I had a conference in Taormina. All suggestions used unrealistic transfer times in Germany, so we figured out that the Bolzano/Bozen to Rome night train was the way to go, over the Brenner pass. From Rome it was still another 9 hours or so to Taormina, with the train on the boat for the crossing.
On the way back we took the night train to Milan, stayed there for a night to avoid frequent delays on that train (which of course ran on time down to the minute). 1/2

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@quixoticgeek From Milan we took the train to Basel and from there the ICE to Utrecht. Switzerland deserves a train with daylight (and early autumn is very beautiful).

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@quixoticgeek The base tunnel route is unavailable for quite some time. So that either gives time to figure out how, or gives a limited opportunity to travel the old Gotthard route, as I think some trains are running that route now. Current estimate is September 2024 before the base tunnel will be open again.
And the truly beautiful route is via Tirano-Bergün-Chur, and then the night train from Zürich.

Like when that one manager comes back after an "extended absence" where everyone knows EXACTLY what he did, but HR have banned you all from talking about it.

Also if Latvia and Lithuania DO manage to re-establish a passenger train connection, that will leave only 2 internal borders of the EU where there are rail lines but there are no passenger services

@jon But are the vertical levels of hte TGV and ICE at least the same? In other words is there a platform height that will cater to both?

taylorlorenz, to random
@taylorlorenz@mastodon.social avatar

Joe Cox got a hold of internal documents that provide deep insight into GOST, a system used by ICE to find "derogatory" speech online.

Analysts can use a "thumbs up," "thumbs down" decision on the material, and feed it into visa decisions and immigration enforcement https://www.404media.co/inside-ices-database-derogatory-information-giant-oak-gost/

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@taylorlorenz last Monday I visited the Stasi museum in Berlin. The GOST system sounds like Erich Mielkes wildest dream.

In an unusual role reversal my housemate is cooking tonight, using my recipe for stamppot boerenkohl. Said recipe includes a bit about smoked sausage. Upon sending the recipe over, I suggest ignoring said section about the sausage, it's the worst part...

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@quixoticgeek a little smoked paprika can be a decent substitute.

@quixoticgeek can ask a colleague (next week). Had pottery oven, not sure how accurate they can maintain a lower temperature.

Please retoot for reach:

Looking for an old Irish friend called Kieron O'Connor who lived around the Elephant and Castle from the eighties until nearly two decades ago (specifically Rockingham and Borough). He moved back to Ireland (Cork?) and I'd love to get back in touch. Probably about 65 now.

Mastodon hive mind, can you help?

I've made a very rough map of every street in Amsterdam that will be changing to 30km/h on December 8th.

The lines in green are changing from 50km/h to 30km/h.

Are there any surprises here for you?

I was surprised by Rooseveltlaan, for example. It's quite wide today!

I'm going to get out to film the "before" case this week (and hopefully livestream the ride, too!)

mrtnsnp,
@mrtnsnp@mastodon.social avatar

@notjustbikes Amstelveenseweg. Realistically you could never do 50 there to begin with, but I din’t expect that to be reduced. The short racetrack between the hospital and the Olympic stadium seems silly. Similarly the on-off-on sequence on De Boelelaan is weird.

Here are the stripes for the Netherlands. Find yours and share them too: https://showyourstripes.info credit to @kathhayhoe

Coloured vertical stripes ranging from blue to red showing the temperature change relative to the 1971-2000 mean for the Netherlands from 1850 to 2022. This graphs has a vertical scale as well. We are in the deep red now.

All aboard

Tell me what international train trips you’ve struggled to find or book - and I’ll ask these platforms why they can’t solve these problems!

mrtnsnp,

@jon Not one that you'd actually want to ride (no night train, or repeated changes on local trains throughout the night, or no chance of arriving given expected delays).
