I bought it 10 years ago for $32, and use it every day. It still works as well as the day I bought it. The exact model (FBB500SS4) seems to be discontinued but you can still find old stock online.

Why @obsidian is 100% user-supported and not backed by VC investors

To keep raising money, VCware must paint an increasingly enormous vision of their future, which becomes impossible to live up to. This leads to increasingly disparate priorities that gradually make the product worse. What starts off as a useful app become burdened with crap. Eventually all VCware must exit. That means being acquired or going public to pay back investors. It's expected that 9 out 10 startups will fail. That's just part of the math in a VC portfolio. The startups that have big exits pay for the ones that fail. It is now possible for tiny teams to make principled software that millions of people use, unburdened by investors. Principled apps that put people in control of their data, their privacy, their wellbeing. These principles can be irrevocably built into the architecture of the app. Principled people have always been able to make principled software. The difference is that now you need far less money and far fewer employees to reach far more customers. That wave is only just beginning. If you have principles and enough patience, being 100% user-supported is by far the most fun way to build.

2027. I set up my new iPhone. I insert my EU mandated replaceable compostable battery. I choose my default browser, phone dialer, Lock Screen, health app, NFC payment app, and Siri voice (the EU mandated an open market for Siri voices in the amended 2026 Digital Markets Act). I go to the App Store, dismiss the cookie warning, select my App Store search engine and download the Coca-Cola App Catalogue to get the Disney+ app to load up on MickeyCoins to purchase the latest Star Wars game.

The overwhelming feedback is that Obsidian on mobile needs to be faster and better. I encounter that too.

There's a lot of low hanging fruit, which is great. Keep in mind the Obsidian team is only 3 full time devs. Be patient with us ☺️

I've been looking at the popular Substack alternatives suggested to me. Any of them will cost me hundreds/year and require significantly more work to maintain. I don't see how to make that work. The platform cut is so high compared to my % of paid subscribers that I'd feel like I’m asking supporters to simply pay the platform owner.

When faced with the choice “Good or Convenient?” human beings don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the pros and cons. Convenience is why people buy SUVs, use Instagram and eat Kentucky Fried Chicken. Convenience sells IKEA furniture, porn, and gasoline. Convenience is the jet engine of diabetes, microplastics and global warming. Compared to all the bad things humanity does to destroy itself, learning writing with AI doesn’t seem that bad.

I'm still cautious with masks in crowded public venues (especially medical) and every time I think I might be ready to drop them, something reaffirms my concern. Yesterday I went to the doctor, where I was the only masked person I saw in the building. The nurse attending my visit was visibly sick (coughing, blowing nose, hoarse voice) and we were confined in the small doctor's office. Kind of maddening to think that going to the doctor could be the highest risk place for getting sick.
