I'm deeply shocked to learn of the death of Steve Albini. I'm a huge fan of his work. I watched a YouTube video of him not even a week ago!

After a long pre-order period, @jmechner's new book "REPLAYโ€ arrived shortly after Passover! It's a graphic novel memoir that tells the story of his family. My french is so damn rusty, I had to wait for the English edition.

Looking forward to reading and sharing it with my daughter. (Iโ€™m not sure how childproof it is, but parts will be fine I'm sure).

@hotdogsladies The sad part is, ChatGPT & Co fails just as miserably when you reach their limit. A core future human skill will likely be to recognise if a language model has hit that limit. With old Siri it's still easy to tell. The newer ones are confident bastards.

Every few weeks the same thing with Signal for Mac. Same for WhatsApp. Only iMessage gets this right and treats non-phone devices as first-class clients that can actually log in on their own.

@gruber I suffer from this all the time, especially with WhatsApp, which I don't use every day. Also with Signal on my second MacBook, which is often closed for days at a time. On my primary Mac, however, where Signal is open 24/7, there are no problems.

If, like me, you download and use a lot of open source software from #GitHub, it's sometimes hard to keep track of updates. What I like to do is to be notified when there is a new release.

It's 4 simple clicks if you have an account.

I opted for email, but you can also use a bookmark for the notification dashboard or use the API to create an RSS feed.

I'm really puzzled by people saying Apple is betting on the app store to make the Vision Pro a success, "just like they did with the iPhone".

They didn't do that at all with the iPhone. It didn't even have an app store at first.

The iPhone had multiple killer features right from the start. It was incredibly useful without installing anything from a 3rd party.

Indie games will not be able to be in any type of alternative AppStore for iOS in the EU. This is crystal clear, because everybody did the math already, due to Unityโ€s horrible but now abandoned โ€œdownloadโ€ fees. Apple had the same fucked-up idea.

@ivory Iโ€™m not sure when this started, but in Ivory 1.8.1 on macOS and iOS gifs and videos no longer play. Neither autoplay, nor when manually hitting play. Thumbnails and Downloads work. This started a few days/short weeks ago.

Mastodon Website (my instance) as well as โ€œMammothโ€ client work. I've tried setting Display/Video Playback to โ€œAlwaysโ€ and โ€œOnly on Wi-Fiโ€ - sadly no change.

You can reproduce this by opening the links in Chrome (macOS). Iโ€™m not sure why this is caused. Seems like our Mastodon instance sends out wrong headers.

@ivory I had a lengthy chat with my instance admin as well and we narrowed it down to this:

The src path was misconfigured, so the server tried to use rails as fallback proxy. This explains why the Content-Security-Policy headers from the application were spit out.

No client is to blame here. And I think this is my 3rd message to you with an issue that has nothing to do with Ivory. Apologies.

@ivory I mentioned our fix because this also means when an instance actually uses the rails fallback proxy (when ngnix cannot find a file), Ivory and Chrome doesnโ€™t play videos. Images work.

Safari and Mammoth work. So maybe the bad Content-Security-Policy header (which makes no sense on assets) is something that your app maybe could ignore. But that's for you to decide. IMO Mastodon shouldn't send out the application headers when an asset is served.

All in all, something that's good to know.
