A lightly left-leaning generally Democratic friend has just now noticed that freaking out about the election is reasonable... but they do take my opinion somewhat seriously (even after calling me "probably a communist" I have no idea)

I made such a horrible face (involentary) when they said something about giving money to Biden I had to make another suggestion ... uh..."Democracy Docket?"

Any democrats who might not get the help they need from the DNC but still might win I could also mention?

@futurebird The very normie Dem political blog Balloon Juice does targeted campaigns through ActBlue to support causes and candidates where they think the money has a lot of leverage. They've had a good track record in the past, as far as I can tell--one of their favorite organizations is Four Directions, which does Native American voter registration and turnout work in the West, but they focus on others as well. I do a lot of my political donating through them.

Suggestions have to be normie dem safe.

But there has to be a better place to throw money than at Biden right now.

Voter reg and turn out efforts?

State level races

@futurebird Yes, voter reg and turn out efforts precisely, focused on presidential battleground states (if your friend's freak-out is primarily about the presidency). Also orgs that will help fight for ballot access, and be positioned to join in legal challenges if the electoral college is close again. So something like Stacey Abrams' Fair Fight Action? https://fairfight.com/

18+ jdp23,

@futurebird Great question. Here's an excerpt of a Facebook post I did answering a similar question back in 2020 (leaving out some of the specific examples I had used which don't apply any longer).

...

Several people have recently asked me where their political donations can have the most leverage. There are a lot of good candidates and non-profits out there ... so many that there's no way to support all of them! So here's how I prioritize my giving.

  • VOTING RIGHTS organizations have the biggest impact because they help candidates up and down the ballot. Black Voters Matter (https://blackvotersmatterfund.org) and 4 Directions Vote (https://fourdirectionsvote.com) are both on the ground in a dozen key states. Movement Voter Project (https://movement.vote) partners with community groups across the country, providing infrastructure to help efforts scale as well as money.

  • BLACK, INDIGENOUS, TRANS AND NON-BINARY STATE AND LOCAL CANDIDATES. Money in state and local races goes a lot farther, and it's more likely to be returned to the community (as opposed to being spent on insidery consultants, as so many Senate campaigns do).

  • SENATE CANDIDATES WITH GOOD CHANCES WHO ARE NOT GETTING THE SUPPORT THEY NEED.

  • KEY STATEWIDE REFERENDUMS.

deskJet95,

@futurebird Friend of mine from HS said he was considering voting for Trump for the first time in '24 because "Biden's senile." So, that's reassuring. I didn't even bother trying to convince him otherwise and just segued into talking about old people going mentally wacky in general. Oh well.

@deskJet95

How do they feel about Trump saying "do whatever the hell you want" to Putin?

Putin has Dmitry Medvedev running around waving a map where parts of Poland are ... in Russia.

Dude literally wants to invade Poland next. And the US couldn't "stay out of it" then nope.

Does he care? A lot of people have Ukrainian ancestry or relatives in the US. It's bad.
