It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».
They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).
I find that scary, because it means that some people, more and more each year, seem to view any regulation of any company as « meddling » or as a bad thing, which also means some people want MORE unbridled capitalism.
They also seem to link helping people who aren’t as rich, or privileged as something bad, and that inherently implies a worldview where everyone is just out for themselves.
@thelinuxEXP you assume that those people (whoever of them are people) will not complain when there would be no regulations. But no, that's the kind of people who will ALWAYS complain, even if it contradicts their previous complaints.
At a time where we should have more compassion, a serious re-evaluation of our priorities, our way of life, of consumption, it’s disheartening.
And especially in the Linux community where helping others and sharing is at the very core of everything: how do you reconcile « no one should have « handouts » (except tax cuts for companies apparently) with « let’s share knowledge openly and develop things for others to use freely »?
@thelinuxEXP I highly recommend Veritasium's video about game theory. It gave me a totally different perspective on how and why cooperation works. I feel more optimistic after watching it.
@thelinuxEXP the prolem, mon ami, is some ppl cannot decide if they wanna b open source practitioners or in the proprietary camp. there are days that i agree that there shd b room 4 both but push comes 2 shove, the cold hard fact is either u r for us, or against us.
@alvinho@thelinuxEXP It should also not come as a surprise that the prevalence of this attitude is very effective in driving people away from FOSS and unfortunately also often times OSS as collateral.
@thelinuxEXP There’s been this divide for a long time between people making FOSS who are largely left leaning (socialist, communists, etc) and people consuming it who at least some fraction are loud and right leaning (libertarian, preppers, ancaps, etc). Unfortunately it seems like in recent years Linux-related media, especially in the US, leans heavily towards these right wing folks. So it doesn’t surprise me their anti-cooperative attitudes are spreading
@thelinuxEXP how many of these comments are coming from Americans? Honestly, I wish the US would regulate the way the EU does, as it puts its people before corporations. Whenever you see "woke" in a business context, it's always meant as "how dare you tell businesses to do the right thing."

people need to realize that the EU is only playing a game of cards in reality, and they are not at all forming an "EUssr".
The EU is in fact, a capitalistic alliance that uses it's power to economically fuck over any country that goes slightly against their agenda (ie: Russia, Palestine, Vietnam, and most countries in the middle east).
Anyone who believes that the EU is socialist at all or even "pro socialist" needs to get outside and stop being deluded.
Well it is because these people have no idea what they are talking about. Not about freedom, not about civil rights, not about social security nor about democracy or freedom of speech.
@thelinuxEXP I assume it’s Americans making those “woke” accusations. Luckily it’s not as dominant in person as it is online (I think it’s a minority of extremists making a lot of noise) but it does get tiring seeing the weekly dogpile against “wokeness” every week.
@thelinuxEXP I don't think there's really too much thought after those comments. As Europe steadily drifts back to fascism, anything less than genocide is seen as extremist left.
@kAlvaro@thelinuxEXP True. Seeing all these far right parties gaining voters is insane to me. It was less than 100 years ago that we had to contend with this.
We have to contend with it right now, with Russia… How can people be this blind, I don’t know.
@thelinuxEXP I don’t understand how these people think. Woke means awake to problems or simply aware of your situation. These “anti-woke” posters seem to revel in being unaware.
@Jawaka@thelinuxEXP It feels like they decided that « woke » means anything they don’t like, and this also seems to include trying to discriminate less, or being more accepting of others.
When someone uses the term « woke » seriously, I generally tend to automatically discard what they’re saying, because that term is rarely used to mean anything other than « I’m very conservative and I don’t like change in society ».
