@scottsthoughts has a question about carrying food:

Q6. How do you transport takeout food by cycle? I hit so many bumps on my ride that it’s usually pretty well jostled by the time it gets home.

Also if anyone has a good idea for transporting a straw hat I’m all ears for that too.

@ascentale @scottsthoughts A6. I have the best pannier for this. A Banjo Brothers one that has volume, but no protection from inclement weather. Of course, I'm transporting kebabs or asian food and not soup...

@DataAngler @ascentale @scottsthoughts I've got an old pair of grocery paniers that are similar to the Banjo Brothers ones, I think and I can also confirm that they work great. They have a square flat bottom which is much easier for doing the grocery shop or carrying odd containers in.

@sam @ascentale @scottsthoughts Yes! The square flat bottom is the secret sauce. I want another.

@DataAngler @ascentale @scottsthoughts me too! The ones I had were by North St. Bags (https://northstbags.com/) but now they appears to be very expensive, so maybe I'll look into the Banjo Brothers ones or some other set for the front rack. Suggestions welcome (actually, this would be a great future , "What grocery panniers do you recommend? What about other types of pannier?")

@sam @DataAngler @ascentale @scottsthoughts One of my panniers is the Arkel shopper which is a square bottom and open-ish top (there is a draw string you can choose to tighten if the weather is bad, or leave open if you have something tall to transport). My one complaint is that rocks/dirt/debris seem to get between the bottom plastic and the fabric of the bag and I'm a little worried some of it will manage to damage the bottom of the bag eventually (but 3 years of daily use so far).

@sam @DataAngler @ascentale @scottsthoughts Mine is a black with grey center panel they apparently no longer make, but I think the design is the same: https://arkel.ca/products/shopper-urban-pannier?variant=43921198809337

(caution, arkel is not cheap, but their camlock system is great)

@DataAngler @SRLevine @ascentale @scottsthoughts too rich for me though! I wonder if the benefits are enough to outweigh the Banjo Brothers ones being half the price? Wire Cutter also recommends Banjo brothers and Arkel bags though, so maybe it's not too much better and I should go with the cheaper one?

@sam @SRLevine @ascentale @scottsthoughts My Banjo Brothers was much cheaper, but if I needed to haul large loads in the rain, I might look at these Arkels more closely. (I have a smaller Bontrager that I would put my laptop in if it was raining.)

@ascentale @scottsthoughts

A6: I do this occasionally, and also do grocery shopping by bike. Proper padding in the rear basket (combined with actively tracking the worst bumps and avoiding them even if it adds time) does the job for me.

eta: I always carry cargo with mesh on top, and that includes here, so I suspect it helps.

Considering now getting a second, much smaller mesh to put under such cargo.

@moira @ascentale @scottsthoughts what do you use for padding in your basket? Also sounds like the consensus is I need one of those bungee mesh things!

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@scottsthoughts @ascentale @scottsthoughts it depends, really. Most often the padded/insulated grocery bag I always carry around anyway is enough. That’s five layers of foam (maybe six?) when it’s folded down flat.

@scottsthoughts @ascentale I measured it! It’s 3cm thick folded up like that.
