That's it for now; thanks for asking, answering, reading and discussing!

Reply, boost and favorite toots to keep it going. I hope you've enjoyed this and found new friends to follow. (Also, you can follow , if you haven't)

We'll do it again next Friday! Reply if you've got questions for next week (add the BikeNitePQ tag for visibility). The queue is still pretty empty, so please add some if you'd like to read answers to something!

And the last question: I was riding earlier this week, and had just lubricated my chain, and had some very quiet tires on the bike I was riding. My pedaling felt like it was seamlessly converted to motion, with no clinking or rattling or any other sound. This is not usually the case 😅

Q8. What's a small but satisfying feeling that you experience via cycle?

@carolski asks:

Q6. It be a little niche, but my is about hauling things. Can anyone speak from experience on the use of a bike trailer for hauling a kayak or SUP short (or long) distances? Especially if there were small hills involved.Thanks!

(And if you haven't, do you know of any other interesting purpose built hauling apparatus that connects to a cycle?)

@xtaran asks about riding at night:

Q5. Do you also ride when it's dark? And if so, what precautions do you take to be seen? Just what's legally required or much more? Battery vs dynamo lights? Multiple lights? Additional reflective clothes or stickers?

@jfparis asked a little while back:

Q4. Do you have any (cycle-related) books to recommend?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Locally, there's a proposal to remove a path on a long bridge for most days of the week, and convert it into a car breakdown lane. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that this would improve traffic, but it will require those who would have walked/cycled/rolled to take a 40 mile detour.

Q3. Have you ever seen cycle infrastructure removed or threatened? How was it preserved, or if it was removed, what were the reasons, and what were the effects?

Last week we talked about bad and good interactions with drivers. @sam asks:

Q2. If the situation gets tense, what are some techniques to deescalate?

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

starts at 4pm Pacific. We ask cycle-y questions for community discussion. I post questions w/ Q1, Q2, Q3; if you answer w/ A1, A2, A3, etc, it's easier to match.

Tag if you want your answer to be more discoverable; follow it to see questions & replies in your feed. Boost & reply to replies to keep the discussion going.

(You can follow BikeNiteQ tag so questions are easier to find, but you don't need to include this in your answers)

Hopefully your interactions with others who drive cars on the road are not all bad!

Q8. What are some positive interactions you've had with drivers while riding?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

And a follow-up, about more immediate responses also from @sam:

Q7. Is it okay to yell back at drivers after a bad interaction? If not, are you or have you done anything to try and have less road rage? Mindfulness exercises? A calming cup of tea? How do you train yourself not to react from a place of anger?

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

@sam wonders how to respond after a bad driver interaction:

Q6. When you have a dangerous interaction with a driver that doesn't involve a crash (drivers throwing things, pulling in front of you and getting out of their car and attempting to stop your bike, etc.) do you call the police, file a report later, get away and then do nothing, or something else? What factors go into making your decision?

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

@xtaran asks about terms discussed enough BikeNites ago for me to forget somewhat 😅

Q5. I remember that someone said you should not use the word "cycling" but "riding" instead. Or was it the other way round? And I also forgot why. I vaguely remember it was something political. And what about "biking"?

(Generally, how do you prefer to refer to the act of riding a cycle, and someone who rides one? And why? Do some of the terms have confusing or undesirable meanings?)

@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Q4. On a more local level, what are good ways that you've seen cycle coalitions to work with local shops? Events? Classes? Promotion? Other partnerships?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Next question is from @meganL about national cycling advocacy organizations:

Q3. What advocacy item would you like the League of American Bicyclists (or whatever your national/local cycle advocacy group is) to add to their lobbying agenda?

ascentale,
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

@meganL

A3. (Oof, sorry about the hashtag typo in the original post)

I'd love it if they could convince more elected officials to ride. Not just for a recreational ride, but to get get to work, run an errand, etc. I feel that it would help them make better decisions if they could understand better a lived experience.

Continuing some of our e-bike discussions, @ClimateJenny asks:

Q2. How can a person with extremely minimal bike mechanic skills (i.e can fix a flat) level up for an e-bike? Are there good videos, books? Do bike shops still do classes?

(Generally, what basic maintenance and repair skills would be helpful for someone who owns and rides an e-bike? Is it much different than the skills required for a pedal/acoustic/push/bike bike?)

Welcome to the May 3rd BikeNite! Thanks for joining, and I hope we all enjoy chatting about cycle stuff! Feel free to answer whenever at your convenience. Anyone can join, now or later. Reply to what you like, and boost for visibility.

We'll start out with our introduction:

Q1. Where are you posting from today? Did anyone or anything motivate you to ride more this week? Or were you not able to ride as much as you had wanted to?

@nsousanis is working on something and would like to hear some comments:

Q8. What are common complaints drivers make about people who cycle/bike lanes/etc?

(Added by me: are they valid? Why or why not?)

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

We've been having some discussions (this question is from @ai6yr @sam and others) about how batteries and motors are making e-bikes and cycles evolve.

Q7. In your mind, what is the distinction between "e-bike" and "motorcycle/scooter"? Does making a distinction matter?

(I sense that this could be a contentious subject - please keep respectful!)

Q6. I have a lot of inner tubes piling up that are useless because of tiny, unpatchable holes. What is a good way to repurpose these?

What about old chains and other cycle parts?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

This question is from @meganL:

Q3. Do you have any fond memories of experiences riding cycles of less or more than two wheels? What do you recall of it?

ascentale, to random
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

Next question from @trouble is about brake pads:

Q2. Has anyone seen brake pads like this before? This is my second time coming across pads that look just like this (the plastic and brake material shapes) on a road bike. Look closely; those shiny silver bits? chunks of rim! I yanked these off and replaced them on my bike with Koolstops, but only after the metal bits wore grooves into my rim, ugh

Has anyone else seen alarming brake/rim/rotor conditions?
