One of the local universities advertising "50 and Better" classes including courses/lectures on Frank Sinatra, 1950's swing, and "Over The Rainbow" makes me wonder why they are conflating Gen X folks with the boomers here... ("just over 50" are folks who grew up with U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.) 🤔

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@ai6yr The people with the time to take those classes are in their 70s/80s?

@enobacon I think @DJGristle is an architect?

One again the solution to the eternal problem of "how do I get rid of that weird smell" is leave the item outside in the sun for a few days.

YMMV depending on the item...

ETA: Apparently this doesn't work on fish or stinky cheese smells.

While I did set myself up for success by choosing an author whose adult books I enjoy, a middle grade audio book was an excellent choice. I'm about half way through it and the narrator does delightful voices and it's easy to follow even though I hadn't already read the book.

If anyone is looking for "easy listening" Ursula K. Vernon's Harriet the Invincible is A+

Late question for the crowd: Do you have recommendations for clear wraparound glasses to keep from getting beaned in the eyes by gnats and larger bugs when cycling at twilight? When it's sunny, I have sunglasses, but I need something for darker times of day when I still need eye protection. Something for big heads, hopefully with customizable fitting around the nose/cheeks. @bikenite

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@meganL I've seen people use safety glasses, some of which are a wrap around style rather than bulky. They all have adjustable temples, which is usually enough for most people. I don't think I have any spares in that style though.

I swear the marine layer has an ever-so-purple tint to it, LOL. Or I've been staring at too many purple photos here.

@chris @ai6yr What direction are you all looking in?

FML, I just heard an "explosive decompression". At home.

That's number 2. What the hell did the shop do to the brand new tire?!?!

ETA: Also I am out of spares (again). Will have to walk my bike to the shop tomorrow (after I volunteer? that's a bunch of extra walking a bike...) or just give up at this point and buy a new tire? Ugh. I hate this so much.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@redrummy No, that's an entirely separate problem. Which I am working on, but I'm being very picky and wanting to get something used, so nothing both in budget and fitting my desired parameters and close enough (or a reasonable shipping price) had come up yet.

We don’t all need to buy the exact same things that we use occasionally. We should have organized borrowing.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 My local buy nothing group (on facebook, ugh) does a bit of this. I've had people stop by to use my bike pump on sports balls and loaned out my fancy dishes for a tea party themed baby shower.

The later was kind of fun since she sent me photos of the table set-up and I never use the sugar bowl/candlesticks/etc so it was cool to see someone use it all.

A system that didn't involve facebook or proprietary smartphone apps would be great though.

TIL calls to the suicide crisis lines are not geo-routed

"Right now, callers are routed to centers that match the three-digit area code of their phone number: Someone with a Baltimore phone number would be routed there, even if the person is in Sacramento."

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@divya There are still plenty of local crisis center numbers right? I wasn't under the impression the presence of 988 caused them to close, but maybe I'm mistaken?

"Median Manhattan rent was $4,250 last month, a 3.7% monthly increase and 0.2% annual increase. It was the third time in four months it’s gone up year-over-year, and was also a whopping 26.7% higher than prepandemic average in April 2019. Studio apartments rose to $3,250 while two-bedroom units dipped to $5,195.”

Bikes don't need to replace everything cars do, like killing 40k Americans and life-changing injuries for millions more every year is entirely optional.

Biking home last night (dark out): "Is that a cat running across the road?, Seems kind of large."

I get closer: "It looks more like a dog now that I can see more of its outline. I really don't want to play good samaritan tonight and try to get a strange dog to let me check its tags" sigh

"Oh, oh. Guess I won't be checking any tags"

It was a coyote.

(I see them somewhat regularly, but usually in the nature preserve or on the edge of campus, not on residential streets)

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@GustavinoBevilacqua Well I've never seen a road runner outside the nature preserve, so how was I supposed to expect a coyote?

(side note: road runners are actually pretty small, the cartoons always made me think they were similar in size to coyotes, very disappointing in person)

And you're correct about the hashtags and unlisted posts. Since I default post unlisted I have to switch to global specifically to make hashtags work.

What did I find in the bike lane?

Measurements are ~20 inches by 38 inches.

The reverse side is a similar material to what is used on the outside of orleib style waterproof panniers if that helps anyone.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@mivox I don't think it's big enough for that? since 38" would only cover the back of the seal and not the bottom. But anyone's guess is better than my total ignorance right now!

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@Leeisme The logo looks like an outline of a few dogs, is there a baby supply company with a logo like that?

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@mivox I just took out my tape measure and checked my chair to confirm and you might be right? But I'm sitting in a normal chair and I think car seats are usually taller? I really don't know though.

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@Leeisme Oh, huh. That could certainly be it. @mivox maybe?

SRLevine,
@SRLevine@urbanists.social avatar

@Leeisme @mivox It's probably not worth it (also effort...). I have tracked down that it's made by five below and is a dog item, but it doesn't correspond with anything currently on their website.
