So @protonmail, the darling of user privacy, has turned ON by default a 'daily notification email'.

This sends an email to the mailbox you nominated as a recovery address to helpfully let you know that you have mail in your Proton inbox.

You are not told about this setting.

Given that a good percentage of people surely create a Proton account to be hidden, this seems like an egregious breach of trust.

I gave you my 'other' email address specifically for recovery purposes and THAT IS ALL.

@johnnydecimal Note that your recovery address is also your notification address: https://proton.me/support/providing-a-notificationreset-email-address. This is not a new setting, it has been so for years now. We'll pass your feedback on to our team internally.

@protonmail You don’t think it directly conflicts with your privacy-first stance?

I don’t understand how anyone there thinks that this is a good idea.

@johnnydecimal Note that this functionality doesn't share any of the content of your emails in the Proton Mail inbox with your recovery email address. The address itself needs to be known anyway, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to use it when the need for a recovery arises.

We understand that some of our users wish to avoid this, which is why we provide other recovery methods:
