A while ago, something I heard made me think: What if we were in some alternate universe, considering moving FROM battery EV's to petrol/diesel-powered transport? What would our objections be in that scenario?

(Note: I'm not an EV zealot. EV's are not yet for everyone. This is just a thought experiment.)

@ross Also, as a further thought experiment, why not consider the advantages?

@dartiss What are they?

Longer range?

Lighter (on an energy/weight ratio)?

I get those. And that’s why complete decarbonisation of transport feels like a difficult goal. Oil will always outperform in some areas.

@ross Insurance may be another - it seems EVs are pretty pricey and may even be pushing up non-EV car insurance costs too.

Some smaller garages refuse to touch automatic gearboxes, and I suspect the same will apply to EVs in general.

Isn't breakdown an issue too? Don't EVs have to be lifted rather than towed?

@dartiss Yep. Those are fair. Though EV gearboxes are much simpler and maintenance in general is less of an issue.

Maintenance and breakdown is interesting. You can’t be towed. But there’s so much less to go wrong that I would imagine breakdowns are less common. But I don’t have stats on that.

Insurance expense is an issue. But from what I gather is down to parts availability. So should recover in future.

These seem like temporary issues that are part of the transition to me.

@ross I'm not sure I agree with point 14. I had a petrol Mazda that used regenerative braking to top-up the lead-acid battery which, in itself, keeps fuel use down. If were moving from an EV world, I'm sure of that technology would be used in your scenario.

@dartiss That’s interesting. I’d be curious about the trade offs. My intuition is that the drain on the lead acid battery is so small that regen would normally be ineffective, or minimally effective.

But yes. Would save on charging it up using the fuel.

@ross It depends. The Mazda used a large capacitor for temporary storage and tricked it back. In winter, with heating, lights, wipers, etc. on, it's much needed.

@dartiss Ah. That’s pretty clever! Nice. I didn’t know there were cars that did that!
