My husband needs cataract surgery. As he was asking me if I could pick him up on the planned date next month, I was perusing the local paper and reading an article about a doctor being sued for destroying a patient's eyesight from that same surgery. I forwarded the article to my husband and it turns out it's the same fucking doctor. Surgery is now off. He's looking for a new person and he'll do whatever I want all day long because I saved him.🤣 😎

@StillIRise1963 Yet another example of what we stand to lose when local journalism disappears.

@dipierro This was my first thought. If I didn't have access to local journalism, we'd have no idea about this lawsuit.

@StillIRise1963 Cataract surgery has been performed for years with great success, almost treated as outpatient surgery I think. My father had both his eyes done 25 years ago and said his eye sight had never been better. That doesn't mean something doesn't go wrong occasionally, of course. Back then they only did one eye at a time just as a precaution. Not sure if that's still how it's done.

@Doppelganger75 Lack of sterile environment was the issue.

@StillIRise1963 Had cataracts done 2 years ago w/antiastigmatism lenses & doc suddenly split town. Tracked him to his new practice ~1,000 miles away. Lost 30+ years of records & now under care of a University hospital clinic. Whew.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@stevewfolds Geez. Why did he suddenly leave?

stevewfolds,
@stevewfolds@mastodon.world avatar

@StillIRise1963 I don’t know. Previous doc had part of clinic, empty now.

@StillIRise1963 You saved your husband's eyes!!

I've seen signs before, but this takes the cake...

@StillIRise1963 close call.
I do whatever my wife wants every day because she saved me 29 years ago and many times since.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@jswright61 Tbh, I'd venture to say this isn't the first time some saving has gone on.

jswright61,
@jswright61@ruby.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 you may have even been the savee at some point. I don’t think my wife would have endured 29 years without some reciprocation. In fact, I’m quite certain.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@jswright61 Perhaps.

@StillIRise1963 I'm glad that you caught this in time. My father-in-law lost most sight in one eye after his cataract surgery. I won't say that the surgeon botched it but he didn't take care to examine the eye beforehand, he should have spotted a problem that might have eliminated trying the surgery.

What I've learned: see a retinologist before cataract surgery to have a complete examination of your eye. Most cataract surgeries go great but you want to be sure you get the best treatment.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@paulc My husband mentioned a test the doctor talked about, but said most don't need it. Wonder if it's the same test. And, it will be interesting to see if the next doctor recommends it.

@StillIRise1963 Yikes, good catch. Stories like this are what keep me from getting Lasik.

StillIRise1963,
@StillIRise1963@mastodon.world avatar

@aires He was going to have his cataracts removed and have Lasik. He'll have to look around more now.

Heinke,
@Heinke@zeroes.ca avatar

@StillIRise1963 @aires When my partner had cataract surgery her lenses were replaced with lenses that compensated for her previously very poor +8 (technically blind) vision to 20/20. Lasik which I think modifies the cornea(?) would then be unnecessary. I wonder why Lasik would be needed in his case?

StillIRise1963,

@Heinke 🤷🏾‍♀️ @aires
