My son, who does high school virtually, had to go write a provincial standardized test in person today. He was the only person who wore a mask in the school.
He remembers how in Japan, on a day like today, long before C-19, people would wear masks to help with seasonal allergies.

Damn, my Pixel 7 Pro greeted me this morning with a boot loop. Probably from an update. I can get to the bootloader, but it boot loops even when trying Recovery or Repair mode. Guess it's time for a new phone. Good thing my PIxel 2 still works.

I heard a creature on our roof late last night. We often hear squirrels on the roof but this was larger. Actually caught bit of it on security camera. Apologies for the poor quality, it's zoomed in a lot.

Grainy security footage of a corner of a roof with a mysterious creature walking by. Two trees are visible in the distance.

My husband needs cataract surgery. As he was asking me if I could pick him up on the planned date next month, I was perusing the local paper and reading an article about a doctor being sued for destroying a patient's eyesight from that same surgery. I forwarded the article to my husband and it turns out it's the same fucking doctor. Surgery is now off. He's looking for a new person and he'll do whatever I want all day long because I saved him.🤣 😎

Heinke,
@Heinke@zeroes.ca avatar

@StillIRise1963 @aires When my partner had cataract surgery her lenses were replaced with lenses that compensated for her previously very poor +8 (technically blind) vision to 20/20. Lasik which I think modifies the cornea(?) would then be unnecessary. I wonder why Lasik would be needed in his case?

I'm making a spring equinox dinner for tonight. But I wonder, do people usually celebrate before or after the equinox/solstice? Like I'm doing it tonight because it's at 11pm tonight, but I imagine a lot of people would be celebrating tomorrow because it's the first full day of spring?

Heinke,
@Heinke@zeroes.ca avatar

@mariellequinton I celebrate on the day, usually by making some donuts.
In Japan the equinoxes are public holidays on the day, although I would have to look up if they do their time zone or GMT or some other technicality. What are you making for the special dinner?

Any tips for dealing with hayfever in Japan? The over-the-counter claritin does... zero. I was hoping it might pass in a week or so, but I remain a goopy mess.

I could... visit the doctor... but that seems like a lot of hassle compared to just asking everyone on mastodon 😉

(Japan medicine tends to be different brands, and often weaker, than the overseas counterpart. I know what I could get in the UK or US, but unsure if there's anything reasonably effective in Japan.)

Heinke,
@Heinke@zeroes.ca avatar

@elizabethtasker The pollen masks work really well in Japan. I get seasonal allergies but was happy to be able to use something other than drugs. I seem to remember they even had discreet filters you could put up your nose!

Heinke,
@Heinke@zeroes.ca avatar

@elizabethtasker N95 masks work probably even better but the pollen ones are super easy to breath in

Okay I was a little skeptical, but as a long time Guinness fan, that is impressive. No wonder it's so hard to find.

Doesn't quite fill my pint glass at 440ml, but the can has the widget inside, so produces a nice head with good retention.

I stopped my phone plan with Virgin today. They increased the price without even an email or text. With the amount of ads they sent me the phone plan should be free anyways. Even Disney+ at least told us they are increasing prices on Christmas day.
Lots of other companies have $15 a month plans. Any recommendations? I mostly use my phone as a walkie talkie with my partner

So my boys' school board (the largest here in Ottawa) finally decided to cancel school on the solar eclipse day.

A few thoughts:
*What "Northern Region" are they talking about?
*You should look at a total solar eclipse during totality with your naked eye.

  • If they are so worried about kids eyes maybe they should have bought everyone some eclipse glasses. They are mere cents when bought in bulk.
  • This might be some newcomers to Canada only news about the eclipse, maybe mention the totality path is to the south of the city.

Here is their statement:

April 8, 2024 - Solar Eclipse: Schools will be closed

On Monday, April 8, 2024, there will be a total solar eclipse. Ottawa, located in the Northern Region, will experience a partial solar eclipse. During a total or partial solar eclipse, it is not safe to look directly at the sun without appropriate protective eyewear. Doing so may result in permanent eye damage. The eclipse occurring on April 8th will last for 2 hours 23 minutes, beginning at 2:11 p.m. and ending at 4:35 p.m. with the maximum point of the eclipse at 3:25 p.m. Virtually all school and program dismissal times occur during that window. To ensure student safety, many school districts, including those in Ottawa, have rescheduled a Professional Activity (PA) day to April 8, allowing students to stay home. Regrettably, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) does not have a PA day that can be moved.

After exploring several options and consulting with the Ministry and key stakeholders, a decision has been made to close all OCDSB schools on April 8th. Transportation will also be cancelled. In addition, OCDSB-operated Extended Day Programs will not operate.

@MichaelPorter I have similar memories staring at the sun in kindergarten, thinking I was Superman shooting lasers from my eyes! 🤣😰

It's the 16th! You know what that means – your luck will be mediocre today. Some good, some bad. Don't let a grey cat cross your driveway, and your coffee will probably be only lukewarm.

It's one of the lesser-known that hasn't really caught on yet.

So they're laying of 9% of their workforce.) Teksavvy is sending me a new modem which I'm happy about. I think I've had my current one for a decade or so

@trendless Can't vote. Maybe something wrong with the megalodon app I'm using.
I was rewearing masks after some good data from 3M showing how long their masks work, but now the real world study showing how poorly masks work when reworn has me reconsidering. I usually wear a new masks for high risk situations like doctor visits and rewear masks for walking outside or maybe receiving grocery delivery
