ben.werdmuller,

Reposting now that we've hit this milestone: here's why I think the fediverse is important for media organizations. https://werd.io/2024/the-fediverse-for-media-organizations

@ben.werdmuller thank you for writing this Ben. Very helpful to a number of people I know in media. I’ve been under the weather. Can any threads user now be followed here, or only specially enrolled accounts?

@shoq @ben.werdmuller Only specially enrolled accounts. It looks like it’ll stay opt in.

@ben @ben.werdmuller

Does that mean I can opt-in to being so enrolled, or is that candy for the chosen ones?

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@shoq @ben.werdmuller It’s open to everyone in the US I believe.

@ben @ben.werdmuller So it is a Threads setting now? Forgive my ignorance, but I’ve been health challenged for 2 months now, and not keeping up with the , or whatever we’re calling it now or soon.

@shoq @ben @ben.werdmuller Yes, it is a setting. For a Threads user to have their stuff visible on the Fediverse they need to go to the settings in their profile, then the account section, then turn on fediverse sharing. They have to click through a couple of screens explaining what it is as well. It is only one way right now. Fedi can follow and see their posts, not the other way around yet.

@abulsme @ben @ben.werdmuller Are there any usable Mastodon.x to Threads account (and mutuals) migration tools yet?

abulsme,
@abulsme@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq @ben @ben.werdmuller I haven’t seen any yet. I asked yesterday to see if anybody even had something identifying high profile Threads users who have turned on the option. Crickets. Right now if you are on Threads and click through to an individual post you can see an icon on posts that are federated (but it doesn’t show up on feeds). Once you see that you can manually search for them from the Fedi side and follow. Painful. Or just notice if someone else boosts them into your feed here.

@abulsme @ben @ben.werdmuller Painful, indeed. Crushingly so. But in pain there is opportunity for remedy, eh?

@shoq @ben @ben.werdmuller @Green_Footballs Yeah, we are only two days in now. It is very early. I'm sure various tools and resources will be popping up soon. And the integration will become more robust. Need the full two way communication for things to take off. And we need a bunch of the big accounts to opt-in. I understand why they did it, but opt-in means it may be awhile (if ever) before various Threads users I would like to follow are followable from here.

@shoq @abulsme @ben.werdmuller @Green_Footballs They're still very early in their roadmap. Lots still to be released.

@ben @abulsme @ben.werdmuller @Green_Footballs I am constantly struggling with the threat versus opportunity matrix presented by Threads.net becoming synonymous with the fediverse in the public’s mind. The next two years will be formative. But of what?

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@shoq @abulsme @ben.werdmuller @Green_Footballs It's imperative that there is at least one more really slick, consumer-grade fediverse-compatible network. Ideally at least 2-3 more.

@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@ben @abulsme @ben.werdmuller @Green_Footballs I still agree with that. I stand by my definition of longstanding. We need an open “hailing frequency” for channel promotion, discovery, sharing and switching. Of course it’s going to be messy as well as useful. Only Threads has the critical mass.
