I haven't been following this because

a) I already dealt with it to my satisfaction when I domain-blocked Threads LAST YEAR

b) ugh, I just feel like there are bigger threats in my day-to-day

but just to check: an individual domain-blocking Threads is adequate to cast them into the blackness of the void, yes?

And is anyone I care about on a server that is going to defederate from .social because of something Eugen said or whatever?

I only want to open this can of worms by like 1 mm please

@elana As I understand it, if a server/admin has not enabled the 'Authorized Fetch' setting, an individual domain block operates like a mute. With AF enabled, it should act like a proper block.

I'm trying to remember if there's a way to identify if enabled/disabled..

@trendless is the authorized fetch thing the countermeasure against opening your profile in a browser window without being logged in?

my understanding of a mute is that I can't see their posts but they can see mine. but a domain block should mean that my posts don't appear in their feeds—indeed, on any feed for any user logged in to Threads—which is a bit different than a mute. am I wrong?

@elana no, that would be if the separate disallow unauthenticated api access setting was enabled

https://hub.sunny.garden/2023/06/28/what-does-authorized_fetch-actually-do/

What you've detailed is also my understanding/expectation of the differences between mute and block. I think this is a long discussed issue with the phrase 'domain block' in the user-facing UI of mastodon: that it really doesn't function as such by default, though recent elucidations (as above) seem to indicate that with AF enabled it will.

@trendless wait, for actuals?? My posts will actually be sent to Facebook-land???

@elana I believe there is opportunity for that in the absence of AF.

Obv it'll still depend to some extent on your reach/search/privacy settings, the privacy of the post, and whether your followers who are followed by threads users boost or reply, etc, but..

Although we've been discussing AF and things related in the zeroes' moderation and policy matrix rooms for months, I still wouldn't consider myself an expert -- it's a complex, technical topic.

@trendless okay. Thank you thank you thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I really don't want any of my posts to achieve escape velocity and enter Meta-land. Even going viral just on the regular Fediverse can be hell on Earth.

well, it's been good… but I guess I'm going to have to be a Fediverse nomad for a bit… maybe it's time for me to start planting some seeds of new accounts in new places.

@trendless @elana This is all gobble-de-gook to me. I want my instance to completely block Threads from seeing or sharing anything I post on it.

@WJBL Yeah, it seems like mstdn.ca is federating with Threads. I don't know if they have the setting active that will prevent them from fetching your posts and sharing it amongst Threads users even if you put a user-level block on Threads. Unfortunately it may be time to pack up and move 😓 I probably won't go through the trouble of "migrating" my account; I think I'm just going to start a fresh one elsewhere. I recommend zeroes.ca ☺️
