This is a BFD. The U.S. always vetoes in Israel’s favor. Biden clearly has had enough of Bibi.

@GottaLaff Did the text mention the hostages?

@tobie1 No

@GottaLaff There goes some of Biden's Jewish support. I guess he didn't think it was important.

@tobie1 @GottaLaff I think it did address the hostage situation. That has been the reason they vetoed previous ones.

@atlgaytheist @GottaLaff Thanks for the link. It matters an awful lot to me.

@tobie1 @atlgaytheist @GottaLaff

It mentions hostages but does not link a ceasefire with hostage release. Basically, it’s free ceasefire resolution for Hamas who just as it was being discussed, sent a salvo of rockets to Israeli towns.

@tobie1@mastodon.social avatar

@Bam @atlgaytheist @GottaLaff Oh my. Hamas has learned it will never be held accountable for anything. It holes up in Gazan hospitals. Israel gets blamed. It commandeers aid trucks. Israel gets blamed. It uses human shields. Israel gets blamed. It kills Israeli civilians. Israel gets blamed. I thought US leaders would have the moral courage to point this out. They didn't. This set the tone for govt's around the world. I'm beyond disappointed.

I will add though that international law is not my area and I have not read the resolution, but what I posted is what I’m seeing from multiple sources

The resolution demands release of hostages but does not make it a condition for the for the month of .

Hamas said the cease-fire needs to be permanent.

@rameshgupta @tobie1 @atlgaytheist @GottaLaff

One thing I have since learned is that it is a nonbinding resolution. So it’s really political theater. But it has already been counter productive. Immediately after it passed, Hamas retracted all its Doha concessions and basically shut down the actual ceasefire negotiations. This resolution has destroyed any chance for a negotiated resolution of the hostages being returned and guaranteed a ground operation in Rafah once Ramadan ends, if not sooner.

An utter disgrace by the UNSC.

atlgaytheist,
@atlgaytheist@theatl.social avatar

@Bam @rameshgupta @tobie1 @GottaLaff it is definitely political theater, but also perfectly fine for countries to take a stance. The US was worried about a resolution harming the negotiations, which is why they've vetoed or abstained from all of them.

But it's also important to be clear that Hamas was looking for an excuse to back out of negotiations. They would have found some other reason. They want a permanent ceasefire, like the one they broke on Oct 7th. Bc they lose all their leverage if they give up all hostages for a temp ceasefire.

@rameshgupta@mastodon.social avatar

⬆️ @atlgaytheist

What has been asking for is permanent without giving up their hostages leverage. They know they will not get that.

What they really want is .

@rameshgupta @atlgaytheist @Bam @GottaLaff Gantz isn't in Netanyahu's coalition. He's a member of the war cabinet but as an opposition party leader. The cabinet may dissolve at which point the war could become Netanyahu's war. Right now, it's not, and the IDF has been able to maintain some degree of independence from Netanyahu's rightwing regime. Heaven help us if that changes.

Bam,
@Bam@sfba.social avatar

@tobie1 @rameshgupta @atlgaytheist @GottaLaff

Also, even if the unity government were to collapse, remember that the PM is NOT the CIC, like the President is in the United States. The CIC is the Chief of Staff of the IDF. So your concern of the complete loss of independence still wouldn’t occur if the unity government were to collapse and Netanyahu still retained a government in the Knesset.

Bam,
@Bam@sfba.social avatar

@tobie1 @rameshgupta @atlgaytheist @GottaLaff

So I finally got the text of the resolution. This is totally political theater. Here’s the operative language:

“1. Demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan respected by all parties leading to a lasting sustainable ceasefire, and also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, as well as ensuring humanitarian access to address their medical and other humanitarian needs, and further demands that the parties comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all persons they detain;

  1. Emphasizes the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale, in line with international humanitarian law as well as resolutions 2712 (2023) and 2720 (2023);

  2. Decides to remain actively seized of the matter.”
