seems like most of the vegetarianism i see IRL is due to religious reasons
is being vegetarian/vegan due to religious reasons a thing in the west?

@cell Here I now some muslims end up picking the veggie option in schools when it's available (why isn't it everywhere smh) but otherwise… I don't think so.
Pretty much just personal preferences/ethics, even with religions involved.

thatbrickster,

@lanodan I'd say they'd pick veggie because there's no assurance the meat is Halal. I'd rather people pick veggie for other reasons but I'm curious as to why it isn't ubiquitous where you are. IIRC, it is in the UK.

@cell

@thatbrickster @cell I think here you'd need to seriously justify it similarly to like allergies, in fact I often saw muslism friends just pass the meat in their plate to someone else on the table.
That said in my experience it was like ~2 people per class, could be different in other parts of France.

Only time I had a veggie option always available was in my pretty leftist democratic high-school.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@thatbrickster @cell In fact it reminds me that some would also just not eat at school, which feels quite inconvenient.

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@lanodan oh that’s because properly halal food usually means the meat has to be slaughtered under a certain manner in the name of god, so even stuff like beef and chicken can be haram; as i mentioned earlier in the thread the exception to this is seafood

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@cell Wouldn't be surprised that in France a pretty large part of muslims just go "no pork, the rest is fine".

prettygood,
@prettygood@socially.drinkingatmy.computer avatar

@cell I would say no. Catholics have some ritual about not eating meat on Fridays or during Lent or something, but then in typical rule lawyer fashion they decided that fish aren't "meat" and that a lot of other animals were fish "because water"

ageha,
@ageha@tomo.airen-no-jikken.icu avatar

@cell
in the us religious people if anything pointedly eat as much meat as possible and show off all the animals they've killed

while seems like germany and euros around there no-meat is just subtype of general popular culture

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell only during the period of fasting. otherwise extremely rare. im strictly vegan and not religious

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_vegetarianism
you’ll find this quite interesting then, some of them also have a “no aliums” thing so going to a restaurant it’s fascinating how they can make something taste good without your usual onions garlic etc aromatics

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell gotta read up. visited a bunch of vegan restaurants and temples in china. though my respect for religious vegetarianism/veganism took a hit when i heard why yak is popular in tibet.

killing an animal and eating it is considered a sin.

yaks are big. one sin for lots of meat. good economical sin to meat ratio :facepalm_cirno:

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell oh and i had a buddhist (german) flatmate ones. he was verrrry missionary.... he was only vegetarian but told me im not a "real" vegan if i let others sin :laughing_cirno:

though those are ofcourse single negative examples. the food in buddhist temples was awesome! never managed to replicate some tastes

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen you’ll have to tell me about your adventures in china etc. one day very fascinating :02lurk:

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell sure^^ maybe over some yummy food?

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen another dinner date with you? 😳

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell d-da-date :ChenBlush: !?

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen :niceshy: y-you could take me to your favorite vegan place…

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell my favourite place? you want me to cook for you?!?

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen :neofox_pout: that would be fun…

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell mhhh

"in addition to the fetid vegetables;"

so onion, garlic, and co

but why? just because it is intense? :thinking_cirno:

internet says "For some, it's because they are considered "hot," and are seen as liable to increase the body's desires and lusts"

so no horny :thinking_cirno:

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@grillchen the reason i’ve heard is more that harvesting them might accidentally kill earthworms or the like? anyhow…

this is the month for no horny :niceembarrassed:
but ironically because such things are repressed i find it that people are much hornier :neofox_baa:

koakuma,
@koakuma@uwu.social avatar

@cell @grillchen Even more interesting is that there are also a couple religious views (Jain IIRC?) that is so strict that they also consider most plant roots and mushrooms to not be okay to eat because harvesting them kills the organism :blobcatpeekaboo:

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@cell what ? i thought no horny is november!? what month am i missing?! this is spring time! time to find partners, make babys and eat each other and take care of the offspring

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@cell @grillchen I was going to ask if I could join because it sounded interesting, but now I feel like a third wheeler... lol. Going out to eat with actual people is surprisingly fun and I need to do this more often.

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@sim @cell sure join us, im just teasing my dear friend cell. as a friend ~ ^^ i love cooking for people. also those times i improve my cooking skills the most. and i can be very smug about creating something the other person didnt know was possible :smugcat:

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@grillchen @cell I understand. Had to make a joke about being a third wheeler in there somewhere. I don't interact with you both enough! Be warned though, if you sit with me for a meal then you may hear rants about bad storytelling from the current mainstream media! Thankfully the last time I sat down to a meal this didn't happen but get me on the subject...

Now I am curious what you'd make for me to eat. I could do with learning how to improve my cooking skills too, especially when I have children (Or even friends) to cook for. Where have you picked your own skills up from?

I need to learn how to make traditional british/english food vegan.

grillchen,
@grillchen@brotka.st avatar

@sim @cell yeah had to tease cell^^

might be much more interested on your examples of good story telling 👀

>Where have you picked your own skills up from?

self taught. and now whenever i eat something i like i think about how it is made. when i have the time i try to replicate it.

also is a little project where i try to improve my skills. i pick one country after another and look at their dishes and try to veganize them.

im most interested in learning new techniques rather than just recipes.

though i got heavily side tracked lately with fermentation of veggies

sim,
@sim@shitposter.club avatar

@grillchen @cell

>might be much more interested on your examples of good story telling

Honestly, I wish that I could point to examples of good storytelling. But it is easier to point out when something is going wrong, that is where a lot of the focus and comparison has been. I'm still learning what makes good story telling, what good examples there are. I hope that as I learn more about the draft process then I can pick up on this and perhaps explain that better. Perhaps we can then talk about that.

>also is a little project where i try to improve my skills. i pick one country after another and look at their dishes and try to veganize them.

Sounds like a great project and challenge. You must know a lot more about food in order to replicate them too. However, I did recently try a wrap from somewhere, and tried to replicate with my own ingredients which has gone well whenever I want to eat something lighter but have ingredients to use up.

@grillchen @cell This video may be of interest when it comes to writing advice and how to not preach to your audience. Great video about theme too.
