installed Win11 on an old laptop and Rufus prompted me to autopatch the installer to remove the Microsoft account and TPM requirements when I wrote the ISO to USB. cool feature. made it a lot less annoying to set up.

in case anyone cares, my workflow was:

  • grab the iso from Microsoft
  • flash to USB with Rufus, disabling install requirements and Microsoft account
  • put debloater tools, 7z, and FF installers on USB too
  • boot installer as UEFI
  • no product key, pick version
  • custom install
  • do not give it internet
  • say no to everything
  • set up regular user/pass
  • complete install
  • tighten privacy settings
  • run debloater tools to disable everything
  • install FF
  • now enable internet
  • activate
  • updates

@gsuberland then people will complain installing GNU/Linux is "complicated" 😄

@gsuberland would love a more detailed writeup on this, especially the part about "debloater tools". the family and i have to run win11 occasionally and it'd be nice to get rid of the cruft.

@hobbsc search Win11-debloater and win-debloat-tools. both do roughly the same thing but they have slightly different capabilities if you really want to get into the specifics of what you're modifying.

@stullekovski @hobbsc no idea, never heard of it. I'm guessing it tries to kill the telemetry service?

I used custom options on the debloater because I know exactly what features I do and don't want (e.g. this laptop doesn't need or want any of the gaming overlays or Xbox stuff, or Outlook or People, but it does want the Windows Feedback app). Cortana, OneDrive, Search, etc. all got disabled. I've kept the default taskbar stuff for now but I did enable the legacy context menu because it's a 1600x900 display and the Win11 context menu padding is totally excessive at that resolution.

@gsuberland Any suggestion on which debloater to use? Might be nice to clean up my Windows machine.

@gsuberland Nice. I tried to run W11 „in the cloud“ (my own infra, proxmox VMs) recently and failed. This sounds like a worthwhile thing to spend time on in order to create an image one can use when one has to. Thanks!

@gsuberland oooh, I've only used the official media creation tool for windows installs. Does Rufus also pull the installer from MS or do you need to bring your own?

@DanHatesNumbers grab the iso from Microsoft, then use Rufus to burn to USB, and it automatically asks if you wanna patch

@DanHatesNumbers they do have options for grabbing installer media from the internet but I don't think Win11 is on there
