When's the last time you heard anybody mention 'Skype’? 😅

Show how a massively dominant product can just evaporate over a couple of years without anybody noticing

@stroughtonsmith I used to use Skype for family group video calls. That is until we switched to using @signalapp and now just use that for group video and it works just as good 😬

@stroughtonsmith when they started sending me push notifications of news stories I turned notifications off. Never gonna know if I get messages or calls again. What a wildly self destructive move for theoretically a communication app.

@chrisvasselli is this why you haven’t been answering my calls?

happystriker,

@stroughtonsmith when everybody else moved to other voip software during the pandemic i have actively chosen skype for all my online trainings and it does its job.

@stroughtonsmith Many news outlets still use Skype to interview people remotely. I see this often on PBS news which is the only American newscast I watch,

@stroughtonsmith Ease of use won each time a Skype user tried WebRTC apps.

Skype was complex, it cost for usage, it was fiddly to connect, and it changed its UI beyond recognition, from bad to worse. They dealt the fatal blow to their own product first, then it quickly died when every competitor made calling easy again.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

@stroughtonsmith I used it this morning because it remains the most cost effective way to call my mom in Lebanon. She only has internet at home and even then, it’s not always reliable enough for FaceTime audio (never mind video) or WhatsApp audio.

@stroughtonsmith Ironically, I had to revert to Skype to chat with my lead developer because of a Teams update that f*cked up his Microsoft identity.
Way to go, Microsoft!

@stroughtonsmith Funny you mention it – I actually just used it last week because discord (you know, the gaming video chat thing) kept crashing while playing Baldur‘s Gate 3 with a friend. 😁 The audio quality somehow was way worse on Skype though and it somehow lost connection to the camera repeatedly 😅

@stroughtonsmith My company still uses skype because it is free for 1 to 1 calls, and they refuse to use instant chat for internal communication.

@stroughtonsmith I think the only time I thought of it in the last few years was seeing mention of it when signing in to Minecraft at the insistence of the kids.

"Oh yeah, that was a thing."
