I love Wirecutter but…really? “The easiest way to maintain the Platinum Elite, or any suitcase you own, is to occasionally lubricate the zipper with a waxy or lubricating household substance such as lip balm, crayon wax, or graphite shavings from a pencil.” https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/travelpro-luggage-review/ I cannot imagine how to remember to ever do this.

@glennf I was wondering what to do with that big bucket of pencil graphite shavings.

@glennf “Siri in 6 months remind me to lubricate my luggage” is not a sentence I ever expected to have to say.

@glennf this comes with our Yeti tote as well, to keep the seal on the zipper and keep it zipping. They included the wax with the tote.

@glennf My favorite is when you forget which lubricant you used last time. Because oil-wax-graphite is an abomination.

But you remember the way you remember to maintain anything with open joints (that is, not packed grease like bearings): do just a bit each time you use it.

Oil the saw before you draw it. Wax screws before you insert them. Wax the drawer slides. Oil the cutting board after it’s dry before you put it away.

Maintenance is life.

backerman,

@glennf I had to replace the zipper on my TravelPro suitcase after fifteen or twenty years but never lubricated it. B&R is definitely better, though.

@glennf reading this thread, I am now going to use chapstick on all my luggage zippers.

@glennf need to find a VC to fund my new app: Uber but for zipper waxing.

@glennf Or you could just buy luggage with a well-made zip. Crazy concept, I know

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@antonyjohnston In 55 years, I don't recall waxing a zipper once, if you know what I mean

antonyjohnston,
@antonyjohnston@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf Exactly. If your zip is stuck, sure, break out the crayons. Until then, it really shouldn’t be an issue 😂

geekwonk,

@glennf I’d love to know why they appear to give zero thought to Eagle Creek, who make great, durable luggage.

@glennf I never knew this! I can see myself (or @Legopolis) making this part of the unpacking-and-storing-the-luggage process after each trip.

RGPphotog,

@glennf I have one of these travel pros. The zipper pull was literally sheared off after a hanfull of flights.

Which reminds me I probably need to buy a new luggage bag. Again.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@RGPphotog Dang, they are well reviewed! Apparently, if you register the warranty they will fix any bag ever

antonyjohnston,
@antonyjohnston@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf @RGPphotog Briggs & Riley have a similar guarantee. And zips that don’t need lubrication 😉

@antonyjohnston @glennf @RGPphotog I can attest: in 2019 my B&R bag got chewed up in the depths of the Sacramento airport, and was left looking like this. I had to cut it open because some of the zipper tracks fused. The bag’s contents were all intact, which Southwest’s baggage-recovery people found remarkable. A few months later, B&R sent me a slightly nicer replacement.

RGPphotog,

@glennf I never registered. website says gotta register within 120 days of purchase. (years outside that range)

Still, I'm trying to register now, and the registration page keeps disappearing the style number field, won't accept submission. Tried all the browsers. 🤦🏼‍♂️

@glennf If that’s the easy way, I’d hate to see the hard way.

@glennf My parents used to rub candle wax on their luggage zippers before we packed for vacations back in the 70s.

theLastTheorist,

@glennf Pencil graphite is probably great for your shirts too.
