Maybe I'm too corpratist, but why do companies like Epic think they can force Apple and Google to allow Epic Games into their app stores for free? I get it that 30% is outrageous. It is. But Epic seems to want to be in the stores for free, without having to ever pay any fees to be there.

It just doesn't make sense to me.

@thelinuxcast Isn't Epic Games trying to rather distribute their stuff using their own app store than rely on Apple and Google?

The issue seems to be that Android and iOS are pretty locked down though.

@ProfessorCode Now they are. It started out as a protest over the percentage Apple took.

If it were just about openness, they wouldn't be fighting Google over the same thing

@thelinuxcast Do their reasons for starting this really matter that much?

It can't be denied that what they're doing now is pretty beneficial to a lot of developers and may give users more choices.

@thelinuxcast I'm not a fan of any of them, they all want the same thing but the typical capitalist response is if you don't like one system then go build your own

Epic have been trying to do that but Apple built a walled garden then actively blocked any competition & enforced their monopoly to the detriment of the users

Google are just using scary words about side-loading but they don't block it yet

Anyone should be able to compete with their own stores regardless of what I think of them

@thelinuxcast Despite Sweeny pretending to be on a high horse, Epic wants to be the monopoly. They see the rewards Steam are reaping after decades of focusing on their customer base and want what they cant have.

What makes this even dumber: Had they actually given a shit about this, they had the finances to start EGS (or at least something comparable to Steam) back in the day. They didnt because they wanted to focus on Unreal to push iD Tech out of the market.

@thelinuxcast 30% cut is actually pretty standard. Whats not standard is that it's not a flat 30% for everyone and Apple and Google both have been caught charging either 0% or even 5% for some paid apps.
