People are buying this stock not as a solid investment but as a symbol of allegiance, which is cult thinking. The stock is massively overvalued and these small retail investors are going to end up taking a bath that they can't afford to take. They're going to lose their retirements, all for a man who would loathe them individually and to whom their only value is the money they can give them. They're not even being (actively) defrauded. They're doing it to themselves.
@scalzi A certain hilarity in that if they are purchasing stock, they seem to think it benefits Trump directly, when their purchases aren't rallying it, so Trump a) doesn't get the money directly (they seem to think he does?) and b) he's not seeing an improvement in his illiquid worth because the stock is declining. It's perfect.
@scalzi these boomers think they're in it "for the long haul" but there is no such thing as long term investing when you're on the doorstep of retirement (or death)
