Seriously, is it just me or is software quality getting worse? It is now, buggier and slower. What is going on? 🤔

@nixCraft Definitely worse. I marvel at how many times my work laptop will just randomly insert the completely wrong character when I am typing or even using the arrow keys. I hit ENTER and it produces a [ randomly every week or two. I use the up arrow to move up in a document and it acts like I pressed F1 and the help screen comes up. Definitely getting worse.

@nixCraft I've been using for 20 years (now using ). It's still lean and mean when used "vanilla". However, if I enable the autocomplete, autocompile, auto spellcheck, treesitter, folding, etc. then it noticeably takes up CPU as I type. I don't mind paying some CPU for this...

But for eyecandy I really couldn't care less. Loved my keyboard only setup. When I switched to I finally gave up fvwm for . Happily, kde is lean and fast even with eye candy...

@nixCraft My bad. I'll stop programming

@nixCraft more funcionalitys + less payed developers = soon to crash... Is happening with most of the software... Today I had a new company phone, and it's an iphone, I crashed the keyboard like 2 or 3 times... trying to put a german address with spanish keyboard. Amaizing!

hstone32,

@nixCraft software quality is a casualty of the decision to prioritize business application over quality engineering when it comes to tech. I've noticed that anytime someone talks about a piece of technology, its always about how well that technology works for business. The primary complaint I hear against ANSI C is that it's "not good for business."

Given a choice between making a good product, and making the user shoulder the burden, can you guess which one they'll choose every single time?

@nixCraft It's been like this for.... decades?

@nixCraft I think foss software is getting much better. Some proprietary software (I'm looking at you Adobe and Microsoft) gets bloated, filled with spyware. And then we have subscriptions...

@nixCraft

Don't worry, we have our very best A.I.s working on the problem... 😂

@nixCraft It's not just you. It's all getting more and more bloated. It has been as long as I can remember and it just keeps getting worse
