Data point:

A few days ago I explained in my blog what I was planning after I retire from Arizona State University -- namely work to help those who are trying to save democracy, and freedom of expression, in part by helping journalists do their jobs.

I briefly posted my intentions (with links to my blog explainer) here, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

I got the most engagement (replies, likes, etc.) at LinkedIn, by a considerable margin. Mastodon was second, Facebook third, and the blog fourth.

@dangillmor

People who engage on LkIn are hustling to make a name and future for themselves - no surprise that you got a lot of noise there...that is a super algorithmic environment as far as engagement goes. I suspect you felt the "transactional" nature of your interactions there.

Your Masto folks just like you and that is your true audience - probably genuine comments and convo.

FB was Russian catfishing and blog was oldsters like me who actually still fill out web forms as feedback :)

@dangillmor Would it make sense to filter out the automatic replies like “Congratulations” offered by LinkedIn?
