Reading this report about the massive projected overcapacity of factories for making lithium-based batteries in the very near future, and hoping that all y'all "buy an EV, save the climate!" types are gonna buy, like, ten of them and give them away as Xmas gifts or something

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-04-12/china-already-makes-as-many-batteries-as-the-entire-world-wants

@PaulGrahamRaven if battery prices drop, I’m going all-in on one for the house so we can shift our demand

@migurski @PaulGrahamRaven Same! My solar arrays generate far more than my house can consume in real-time. I started planning to build a battery array from parts, but short of buying and repurposing the batteries from an otherwise-totaled EV, it’s just too spendy.

@waldoj @PaulGrahamRaven California’s grid is so clean now that I’m thinking I may never bother with large-scale rooftop solar or net metering. It might be enough to simply ensure that we’re charging up the house morning + midday.

@migurski @waldoj @PaulGrahamRaven it’s a bit complicated, though, in that daytime demand will keep going up so we do need to keep building more generation. But yes, at this very moment batteries to pull in solar/hydro/wind during the day is more usefully clean than solar on the roof, which is interesting!
