Going to a new doctor in Gemany in 2024:

  1. you hand them your insurance card with all your personal data

  2. you fill out a hand written form with the exact same personal data for their files

  3. you fill out another form with the exact same data to agree to their privacy terms.

I really don’t know if people from other countries are aware how much we live in the digital stone age here.

@bastianallgeier
In the USA

Fill out the form online before your visit to save time.

Arrive at the doctor or pharmacy

  1. Please fill out these forms and sign. (Same forms as online)

  2. Tell them you filled them out online as requested.

  3. They give you a thousand reasons why you need to fill them out again.

@bastianallgeier Not to forget standing at the counter, telling them your name and appointment type and getting a loud "ah, yes, you are here for <insert random disease here>. Take a seat, we will call you..." reply...

@Lippe 💯 while her colleague is on the phone and you also learn about the detailed history of three other patients, including their names, addresses and favorite pets.

@bastianallgeier In the beginning of the GDPR shenanigans my doctor didn't really know how to handle the situation. They wanted to be as careful and sensitive as possible and handed out these vibrating notification thingies you get at some restaurants/coffeeshops to the patients so they won't need to announce your name and potentially reveal a secret...

@bastianallgeier The upsides: they know there will be a mistake so they can handle it. You will put something wrong on some form - but there is enough redundancy that they can find those areas. If you only enter information wrong there will also be mistakes but they will be much less common: nobody will know how to handle them and probably won't even discover them.

@bastianallgeier I’ve been to different doctors, because I’m trying alternative treatments. However, this poses exactly the problem you outlined - every new doc wants to get the entire history so far, and believe it not, they can’t just go and grab it from some common database (even though it’s probably there). So, I have to collect all the papers with me in a folder, and go around with it. I know it’s probably a privileged thing to complain about, but come on, it’s Germany in 2024!

@bastianallgeier LOL. You should try it here in Arkansas. We have a healthcare system designed at every level to prevent anyone from actually accessing health care.

@bastianallgeier Oh maaaan, thats really annoying... the "concept" of digital government is waaaay ahead of implementation mostly everywhere... here, in Spain, a young co-worker had to get car insurance for his first vehicle. Its more expensive for younger people, and progressivly cheaper for older ones. Well, he bought it under the name of his grandpa... who died in 1998. No alarms blinked in the system. It went through. How the hell...?!

@bastianallgeier It’s not so stone ageish: I filled out the privacy policy with all the same data on my phone the last time at a new doctor!

@roka wohoo, fancy doctor with their own app.

cdevroe,

@bastianallgeier same here in US. And it is every visit, even your chosen family doctor. We should only have to review it for any changes.

@bastianallgeier New colleague to me after some months living in Germany: Will the flood of letters ever end?

bastianallgeier,

@barning The answer might shock your colleague: No.

@bastianallgeier Data Leakage by Design🤷‍♀️
(I'll do my very best but changing habbits is hard)

@bkastl So absurd. Genau mein Humor.
