    @RickiTarr The medical community barely knows shit about it! I had to go to an Osteopathic natural doctor to get relief and it's 100% out of pocket! I feel SO much better! I've been on HRT since January 2023! My obgyn just started treating it in the last couple of years and the first time I said I had unbearable Hot Flashes, she wanted to put me on Antidepressants. I'm not depressed. A side effect of the mess were less hot flashes. With HRT the flashes are gone and I lost 18 pounds!

    @RickiTarr I'm 58, menopause beat the shit out of me, and today thankfully I'm on HRT and I feel fabulous.
    However the patriarchy doesn't want healthy, empowered older women, we're far to dangerous for the patriarchy.
    Transgendered or CIS, we were never meant to live without hormones, whether we make our own or need it artificially.
    But you can bet that the fascists will do anything they can think of to prevent us from being healthy, strong and clear headed:
    Clear thinking is detrimental to fascism.

    @RickiTarr menopause is FASCINATING. almost no species exhibit it (no matter how long they live.) it’s like us, orcas, some weird moles or something? People think it’s basically so that older matriarchs could care for their grandchildren without competing with them.

    Doesn’t mean it’s fun. But it is an evolved strategy that points to communal, intergenerational child rearing as a key to our success!

    Schnuckster,
    @Schnuckster@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr Never thought of it like that. I wonder how it came about from an evolutionary perspective. Unless, women had menopause younger in earlier times? My mum was only 43, apparently.

    RickiTarr,
    @RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

    @Schnuckster True some women do start earlier, they must have thought they were going crazy, but at least you could get some opium

    When people say HRT isn't natural, neither is being old y'all.

    @RickiTarr
    I would argue that since the overwhelming vast majority of the Universe is "cold dead nothing," ANYthing other than that is "unnatural."

    This would include planets, stars, galaxies, superstructures, megastructures, etc. There's still a lot more "nothing" than "something."

    We're ALL unnatural.

    RolloTreadway,
    @RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

    @RickiTarr Always so weird when people talk about how this or that isn't natural. Nor is harnessing electricity but I don't see anyone desperate to get rid of that as an unnatural intrusion.

    RickiTarr,
    @RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

    @RolloTreadway Right, dying of preventable illnesses is natural, but I'm not interested

    @RickiTarr Yep. Humans are pretty useless, all said. We're weak and slow and incredibly vulnerable. But the one thing we are really good at is working together to create ways to protect ourselves.

    We're great at forming multi-skilled communities that can cooperatively develop solutions to fix all our problems. Without that, we'd all have been wiped out hundreds of thousands of years ago.

    @RickiTarr if they think the literal exact chemicals produced by the human body are unnatural, I am super excited for when they learn about Tylenol.

    I feel your pain!

    Wait until they discover men typically have an above average number of testicles!

    brecht,
    @brecht@social.coop avatar

    @RickiTarr The average is heavily weighted by child mortality though. So the majority of women who made to adulthood probably lived long enough to experience menopause.

    There's actually some interesting theories about post-menopausal women being particular targets of witch hunts, because they didn't fit into the neat gender roles any more.

    @RickiTarr One real quick well actually thing though that isn't meant to dispute as much as as people have gotten older life expectancy has risen, it is only rising for the people at the bottom of the bell curve, the people at the top of the bell curve living in their hundreds is pretty stable as far as I have recollection. That stuff usually has to do with tight community health issues and plenty of money..

    So the richer you were, better chances you'd live long enough for it,

    @RickiTarr When looking at historical life expectancy numbers, it's worth remembering the gawdawful levels of infant and child mortality.

    As I understand it, people who made it into 30s lived as long as many of us do now. Just an awful lot of people died in their first year or first 10 years, and that pulls the average (which is the life expectancy number) way down.

    Which means plenty of people with menopause a century ago...

    RickiTarr,
    @RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

    @colo_lee Women have an even higher mortality rate because of child birth

    @RickiTarr I thought there were studies that in most hunter gatherer societies there are plenty of people who live 70 or 80 years. It is just that child mortality rates are higher because of a lack of vaccines and antibiotics.

    You were also more likely to be murdered. It was probably the leading cause of death after childbirth. Some archeologists believe that prehistoric non-State death rates from violence were as high as 60%!
