If you've gone from a 5-day work week to a 4-day work week I'd like to hear of your experience as I'm considering the same.

Did you have take a pay cut?
Do you work 5 days over 4?

How has it benefitted you?
How has it benefitted your employer?

(please boost)

@dcbuchan at Oslandia it is common to work 80% or 90%, no less than 60% allowed though.

I am myself off on wednesdays, and could not go back, really gives you freedom, quality time with family, more focus when working.

Oslandia also allows additional non-paid days off whenever needed.

We ask part-timers to choose a fixed day off per week, most popular are wednesdays or fridays.

In France usually part-time = pay cut but you keep social advantages like full-timers.

@dcbuchan Every time I hear people talk about wanting to switch to a 4-day work week, they never specify whether it’s still a 40-hour week. Personally, I prefer 5x8-hr days because it affords me the ability to get in workouts after work every day of the work week. If I worked 4x10, I wouldn’t have time and both my physical and mental health would suffer.

I wouldn’t mind working 4x8 if the reduced salary was still enough to pay my bills.

@dcbuchan I did 5 in 4 for many years. Allowed for family commitments, study and other interests. As I travelled lots for work it also meant I never took toil, helping my employer. It was great.

I moved to a 4 day week about 6 years ago so I'd have more time with my kid and my wife could return to part time work. I took a 20% pay cut - but marginal tax rates meant it was less than 20% drop in income.

It's been awesome - I would never look back. It was a complication when changing jobs but most places seemed fairly accommodating.

@dcbuchan

It's definitely better for my mental health and my relationship with my kids. And my productivity didn't drop anywhere near 20% - it's a bargain for my employers too.

Also it helped me learn to delegate - when I was a team leader I had to assign deputies for my non working day - "if there's a question about data science it should go to Zehra"

@dcbuchan I did this at my last gig before quitting to be JD.

Started in the Covid year, I think. I just realised, screw this, I don’t want to work 5 days. I was a contractor and my boss was really supportive so it was an easy calculus: now I just earn 80% of what I did.

It’s life changing. No exaggeration.

I didn’t work Monday. Recommended. Don’t do mid-week; now you’re just waiting for the week to end twice. And don’t do Friday; it’s already a cruisy day, why take it off? ;-)

@dcbuchan The change in mental state was extraordinary.

My job was pretty stressful, and I took it really seriously. I found my weekends far more relaxing knowing that they were 3 days long. We tend to do chores on Saturday, leaving Sunday as the only really ‘relaxing’ day. Knowing that you have two of those is amazing.

And then the work week zips by. Before you know it, it’s over. There’s rarely time for that dip in energy to kick in.

My work output was no different. 100% recommend.
