"Growing concerns" that Ozempic will disrupt big tobacco, candy companies, and alcohol brands, according to Morgan Stanley

Are GLP-1 drugs the first real threat to the hyper-processed food and alcohol industries?

https://curingaddiction.substack.com/p/growing-concerns-that-ozempic-will

frumble,
@frumble@chaos.social avatar

@cstross But why? Users have to take Ozempic their whole life! They are buying fast food/drinks like before but now without weight increase. This doesn’t make sense to me, if anything those brands should be thriving even more! It’s not like Ozempic does deincentivize you to eat junk food.
Edit: According to this toot it actually does?!

@frumble @cstross it also lessens appetite in general, including fast food. Exact mechanisms are still WIP.

@genecowan@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Doesn't it just mean that people can have all the tobacco, candy, and alcohol they want, and then just have a shot of Ozempic for the consequences? You'd think they'd be thrilled.

gregly,
@gregly@retro.pizza avatar

@genecowan @cstross No, actually, because these sorts of drugs literally make you stop wanting those things! Ozempic and the like don’t get rid of the consequences; they alter the way the reward pathways in the brain operate, changing behavior. It’s fascinating, amazing, and terrifying all at once.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@gregly @genecowan Yes, I'm seeing it from inside. I pretty much gave up drinking alcohol at home: these days I'm purely a social drinker, and as we've still got COVID doing the rounds I don't do pub sessions nearly as often as I used to. (Used to be 2-3 nights a week; now it's 2-3 times a month.)

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross OH NO! PEOPLE GETTING HEALTHIER WILL MAKE SOME BILLIONAIRES HAVE TO HOLD OFF A WEEK ON THEIR NEW YACHT! WHATEVER SHALL WE DO!?

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@zdl

I think we could reasonably put all the billionaires on a huuuuge luxury yacht, tow it out into the middle of the Pacific, and let them go.

(Without any fuel.)

@cstross with a hole in the yaght.@zdl

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@Snowshadow @zdl Why make it fast?

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross May I suggest in place a carbon fibre tubular deep sea submarine?

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross (We could let them control it with a <insert whatever portable game machine is the latest hotness>.)

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@zdl The XBox game controller was about the only sensible design decision they made on the Titan—they're cheap, robust, easily replaced, and everyone under 40 knows how to use it. (They're used for military drones as well these days.)

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross Waitwhat!? 😲

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@zdl XBoX controllers are designed for controlling a six-axes-of-freedom flying viewpoint with dakka-dakka and missile launchers in a game. They're mass produced for a fraction the price of the actual Mil-STD real thing. And they've been around long enough that people who are actually fighting wars (eg. Ukraine, Armenia) are using them in new weapons systems because not only are they cheap, the soldiers require less training.

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross Huh. Learn something new every day.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@zdl Not big enoughto hold them all—we've been manufacturing billionaires this century like there was a global shortage of them or something.

zdl,
@zdl@mastodon.online avatar

@cstross Well shit.

A fleet of them, then? We can give them staterooms in the Titanic.

@zdl @cstross I'm for the brutalist chic of a shipping container that inexplicably isn't secured well and goes overboard in rough seas.

Jennie,
@Jennie@pagan.plus avatar

@cstross now I have to Google what GLP-1 drugs ARE, hang on

Jennie,
@Jennie@pagan.plus avatar

@cstross .... oooo. OK. Now I want to know WHY I haven't heard of those before

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@Jennie They're all over the news? Available on the NHS in the UK for type II diabetes, available to some patients for weight loss (restrictions apply due to price and side-effects—it's not for casual use). I've been on Rybelsus (an oral form) for diabetes for nearly two years and have lost 15% of my body weight and my blood sugar is now firmly under control. But the side-effects are very Not Fun At All. (Ever wondered what it's like to want to throw up for three whole months, non-stop?)

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross @Jennie No, never been pregnant 🫥

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@ratkins @Jennie Well, with semaglutide even assigned male at birth persons can enjoy one particular highlighted side-effect of pregnancy! 🤢🤮

oddhack,
@oddhack@mstdn.social avatar

@cstross if so, I expect fascist-era food & drug administrations will quickly find Reasons Ozempic is much deadlier than, say, radium or arsenic in food, so must be Banned.

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@oddhack Won't happen: it's the new wonder drug for type-II diabetes right now, weight loss and loss of interest in addictive behaviour are among the side-effects. (Along with ghastly indigestion and nausea—ask me how I know😖)

ivor,
@ivor@ivor.org avatar

@cstross "They also estimate that... around 9% of the U.S. population, will take GLP-1s by 2035"
🤯

cstross,
@cstross@wandering.shop avatar

@ivor Semaglutide first got a product license in the USA in 2017; it'll be out of patent by 2035 (although some formulations will doubtless stay expensive). The way demand and manufacturing are scaling up it's going to get a lot cheaper (like H2 antagonists for stomach ulcers in the late 70s/early 80s). There are already other GLP-1 agonists on the market, notably tirzepatide and lirglutide, and other drugs affecting GIP and glucagon receptors.
