On a sliding scale of the worlds onion eaters, I think I'm probably quite close to the top. Would genuinely be interested in meeting number 1 to see what's going on in their life. It might even be me. Wouldn't that be quite something.

@TheBreadmonkey My great granny used to eat raw onions like eating an apple. I have always thought this quite insane.

@purplepadma

I don't even know what to say to that. Did she peel them first or just go straight through the papery skin? What about the horrible hairy root bit? Did she leave a core, and if so why? What was her reason for doing it? Did she hate people?

purplepadma,
@purplepadma@beige.party avatar

@TheBreadmonkey Who knows why? She peeled it. She was born in 1899 and was suffering from dementia by the time I was old enough to ask questions

I'm going to suggest then that she knew some long lost truth, sadly never passed on. She held the key to humanity's redemption in those raw onions and now we'll never know. Can I just check - did the world start going significantly downhill when she died? (I'm assuming she's no longer with us and not the oldest woman to have ever lived and you just didn't think to mention it?)

@TheBreadmonkey Let’s see, I think she died when I was 11, so 1985? Maybe she cleared the way for Live Aid

@purplepadma

Argh. Just by saying this to me, it's taken me on what I'm calling a 'spree', reading about all the people who died in 1985 so I can reply to you with something stupid. Instead I'm reading the history of the entire world (also was your grandmother the younger brother of Robert Oppenheimer?).

purplepadma,
@purplepadma@beige.party avatar

@TheBreadmonkey Yes! Yes, she was. One of the more interesting features of my family tree

@purplepadma @TheBreadmonkey I am become death, the devourer of onions.

@Nickiquote @TheBreadmonkey Your breath has certainly become death

@purplepadma @TheBreadmonkey habit of time, and perhaps home farming? Or a leaveover from Great Depression? My family had lots of weird old recipes because of my grandmother's experiences.

@NadiaPurge @purplepadma

Do you know, my brain didn't even think to allow the notion there would be a genuinely good reason for it and I immediately thought.... probably spells or something. Nice to know we've come so far since the Salem witch trials...

@TheBreadmonkey @NadiaPurge I just thought she was a bit of a country yokel
