My estimate, based on several analysis, is that the Fediverse is about 3% explicitly antisemitic. This is based on analysis I've done on hate messages across the Fediverse, analysis on my own posts, etc.

Then there's another layer of people who believe antisemitic lies and will spout the, though often they'll do it "carefully" so as not to show the appearance of hate. I have many examples of this. These kinds of people are peddlers of social capital and see that they can get away with advocating violence against Jews in coded language in one post, then be celebrated by saying they "Don't hate anyone" in another- giving cover to their hate.

Finally, there's a huge majority that is simply silent. They don't want to "get involved".

Well as John Mellencamp says "Silence is Complicity".

So, my non-Jewish friends... what about you?

@serge Is this the fediverse as a whole, or Mastodon specifically?

serge,
@serge@babka.social avatar

@acarson

I mean mainstream Mastodon- ie not gab.com or threads, but the mainstream sites.

acarson,
@acarson@babka.social avatar

@serge Wow. That's bad. Very bad.

serge,
@serge@babka.social avatar

@acarson

This is based on patterns I've seen in our reporting on large instances vs active accounts, the number of negative replies I received on my "Like or Boost if you support Jews being safe", etc.

The 3% number shows up a lot, but what makes me think this is under-reporting is that we already Limit or Suspend so many instances that we're skewing towards the positive, not the negative.

@serge @TonyStark something that's really startled me the last few years is my failure to recognize antisemitism at times.

The most glaring example are villains who are clearly meant to be Jewish. I just didn't see it until pointed out* and it's shaken me that I missed it. I wonder and worry about what wife I'm not recognizing.

*I know the bankers in HP making me uncomfortable--I recognized that on my own--but when they were coming out I shrugged it off. To my shame.

TonyStark,

@philip_cardella @serge Thanks for saying that.

@philip_cardella

That's interesting, because I tend to think of this as being somewhat low on the list of things I worry about.

Is Jewish stereotyping a problem in media? Absolutely, but it's always been this way, even when antisemitism was at its lowest points in the US, such as the 1980s, and 1990s.

What's happened now is that a new media villain exists, one called the "Zionist", which allows Jews to be hated without "hating Jews".

@serge @philip_cardella The older stuff laid the foundation for the new stuff in my view but obviously different opinions are out here and worth discussing.

@TonyStark

Oh for sure, and I don't want to shut down any avenue.

That said, I've had conversation with so-called allies who really love this media stuff, because they can go on blast about how awful JK Rowling is, and old fairy tales, while attacking living Jews now because they're such great allies.

Even moreso, they can get me to waste my time on gnomes and other bullshit, rather than what's really important.

It's from that place I'm responding.

But yes, those media portrayals too. :)

@serge @philip_cardella Excellent point.

@serge @TonyStark The media issue, to me, is something glaring I should recognize. The fact that I have trouble with it suggests to me other areas I'm missing things.

Humans have shown an incredible and grotesque ability to use labels to convince themselves that the evil they're doing isn't really evil because they stuck a label on something.

@philip_cardella @serge One thing I enjoy about talking to you, Philip, is that you are very mindful about considering and reconsidering your views. It’s rare. I’ve learned some things from you in return so I appreciate that.

I try to do that, too.

TonyStark,

@serge Most of what I see is in the word swapping technique, AIPAC stuff, and stuff like “a Jew was there so nothing antisemitic could be happening.” I’m not sure where that falls.

dukepaaron,
@dukepaaron@babka.social avatar

@TonyStark I'm worried if I walk within 5 miles of a nazi protest, the fediverse will decide it's OK because a Jew was there. @serge

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@dukepaaron @serge “A Jewish guy talked to my Uncle Steve in 1992 near where that Nazi march is located so it’s ok- a Jew was there.”

Probably coming soon on the Fediverse if it hasn’t already.
