I'm not Canadian, but very familiar with "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" as it was constantly played on Radio Caroline (perhaps as gallows humour due to the questionable seaworthiness of some of the radio ships used).
Apparently it was about his pet cat, who would wander the streets of a seaside town during the night 😺
