This book, so far, has presented a somewhat surface level overview of a lot of the technical aspects of the development process, a good vocabulary lesson, and a somewhat deep dive in to the technical aspects of what a camera does, and why you might want one kind of a camera or another.

It is very descriptive, and not very prescriptive, which might appeal to some folks.

I think it's spending too much time on technical minutia, at the expense of practical advice, but that might just be because I'm already overly familiar with this aspect of the topic.

If you're considering making a film:

Focus on the story. Use the camera you have, until you outgrow it. Spend more time thinking about sound than video.

Beautiful productions have been made with 480i60 black and white analog video tube cameras. What you have in your hands or your pocket is almost unimaginably more powerful.

Start there, worry more about sound, location, story, blocking, etc.

@ajroach42 You know, listening to so much audioshows broke me in a way: Even in watching video I focus almost exclusively on the sound design now!

@alcinnz @ajroach42 I sometimes listen to the local ABC radio, and I love how their sound people create audio landscapes. People will be doing an interview and there will be sounds of kids playing, or a river, or cars or something - this textured sense of location which is quite lovely.

If you're not considering making a film:

Consider making a film! Make a short one. A poem read over something you like looking at. Or a funny one. Or an epic space opera with shit props. Or you and three friends sitting around a table doing an improv rpg scene. We have come closer to universal access to the tools needed to do so than has ever existed before. Everyone should make a film or two. Young folk should make a hundred.
