Ugh, apparently my little tortie foster kitty Madelyne's adoption isn't working out. Looks like I might be spending my Saturday coaxing her out from under a couch.

I'd remind people that most cats take time to acclimate to new homes but I feel like I'm preaching to the choir here. But holy heck people, please be patient with your new adoptions.

@trixter It took Whiskey most of a month to feel comfortable out of hiding. I'd like it if every time I got a cat they Just Knew I'm trustworthy, but it's not like that.

@Hasufin Sometimes it's just personality, too. Maddie's been with me since she was 5 weeks old. She loves attention. But she's naturally a little high-strung.

@trixter Whiskey is really anxious. He'll flop next to me for hours and look at me while making mashy-paws. But I still can't pick him up.

@Hasufin The second cat I adopted -- to keep my big boy cat company -- still won't let me actually touch her 4 years later, but she'll sit on me sometimes, and she loves my big boy to pieces.

@trixter I moved with a cat to a new apartment and we didn't find him for a day and a half because he found a hidden hole in the wall inside a cabinet almost immediately and didn't come out. And that was a new place with humans he knew and liked nearby!

@Konghammer Sometimes they're like that! Just not always. I told her that Maddie would need a little bit to acclimate because she's sweet but can be a little high-strung. This lady needs an orange tabby. But from another organization.

Someone else who adopted from us last weekend is complaining now that their 9-week-old kittens are too feisty with their dog and they should not have even been introduced to the dog yet. People do not want to listen.

Miss Maddie is back with me now, and very relieved about it. She cried in the carrier the whole way home because she wanted me to love on her — I put my fingers through the door and she threw herself into rubbing up against them. Now she’s joining me for an early evening nap.

@Konghammer It's got to go through the head of the rescue, but she'll always prioritize the cat's happiness over anything else. It sounds like Maddie's not happy there, so once she talks to the lady, I'll probably head over tomorrow to coax her out from under the sofa and take her home.

    yagathai,

@trixter I once got called in to pull the same cat out of two different post-adoption ceilings. We had to add "no drop ceilings" as a condition of adoption.

@yagathai Ha! Poor kitty, but also, very clever kitty.

    yagathai,

@trixter it took me over a week the second time!
