So I'm keeping a list of things that are about to be gone or severely restricted (in the next 10 years) due to climate change, so far the list has been growing:

  • Avocadoes
  • Potatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Cocoa / Chocolate
  • Tomatoes
  • Salmon and pretty much all things from the ocean.
  • Mangoes (added by @337guanacos)
  • Almonds (added by @neverbeaten)

Anything more to add?

@noblessefemina Why these things specifically? Is it because they take a lot of resources to grow?

@sashin each have their own reasons, for example avocadoes are very water intensive crops and our global water supply is running very, very low. Salmon are sensitive to heat and our oceans are rapidly heating up, salmon farmers have experienced mass deaths of their salmon even with the current amount of ocean heat which has risen steadily every single year.

@noblessefemina @sashin and potatoes!?

@keith @noblessefemina Asking the real questions here!!!

@sashin @keith Potatoes, like salmon, are extremely temperature sensitive. For a few years already now (iirc since 2017) potato production has been steadily declining year after year due to climate change, and projected to continue to decline even further since climate change is not stopping.

@sashin @keith Now, whether the market chooses the route of slowly strangling us out of potatoes by pricing mechanism slowly going up, or if the market chooses the route of the Olive Oil or Chocolate, where you wake up one day and suddenly the price just skyrocketed 10x, we cannot know. Either way they will be gone.

Potatoes are shorter, so french fries are shorter when it gets too hot.
(And overall yield goes down).
