So I'm keeping a list of things that are about to be gone or severely restricted (in the next 10 years) due to climate change, so far the list has been growing:

  • Avocadoes
  • Potatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Cocoa / Chocolate
  • Tomatoes
  • Salmon and pretty much all things from the ocean.
  • Mangoes (added by @337guanacos)
  • Almonds (added by @neverbeaten)

Anything more to add?

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@sashin each have their own reasons, for example avocadoes are very water intensive crops and our global water supply is running very, very low. Salmon are sensitive to heat and our oceans are rapidly heating up, salmon farmers have experienced mass deaths of their salmon even with the current amount of ocean heat which has risen steadily every single year.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@sashin @keith Potatoes, like salmon, are extremely temperature sensitive. For a few years already now (iirc since 2017) potato production has been steadily declining year after year due to climate change, and projected to continue to decline even further since climate change is not stopping.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@sashin @keith Now, whether the market chooses the route of slowly strangling us out of potatoes by pricing mechanism slowly going up, or if the market chooses the route of the Olive Oil or Chocolate, where you wake up one day and suddenly the price just skyrocketed 10x, we cannot know. Either way they will be gone.

Gonna do something I rarely do: provide link to hellsite, bc too much to try to copy/paste here due to quote tweets.

But here's the gist, via capitolhunters:

The smartest conversation I've seen on Twitter today about the chaos is screenshot below. The core question: why did someone want Jim Jordan installed as Speaker badly enough to use threats of violence? What was Jordan meant to do? "What kind of project is this?"

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the industrial age have been dumped into the atmosphere since 1990.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@davidho Finance: You can simply steal money from the population via borrowing and inflating the supply of money. Money's primary use is a weapon meant for war of attrition in the battlefield that is the market, not a means of exchange.

Not even a secret anymore at this point, people just seemingly don't/can't care or not smart enough to figure it out, the same way that people just don't care about climate change no matter how hard we tell them to.

@lowqualityfacts maybe billionaires and their lackeys can practice building up tolerance for a headshot

When you really think about it, it's utterly baffling that we've reached a state where the expected norm is that you literally aren't allowed to do some kind of labor (code) in your own time, because it 100% belongs to your employer.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcc @zkat this is part of the violence of privatization. You are the resource and they don't want to share you with the world.

I am increasingly worried about the current AI hype cycle taking down all of computer science with it. The more I think about it, the field is on the verge of a legitimacy crisis from several root-causes.

I've seen some AI/ML people (Timnit, etc) talk about the need for an anti-AGI movement. I think that applies to generally. If the public at large comes to equate CS with AGI, it will kill the whole field for a decade when AGI implodes.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@rysiek @emc2 Except you can't create tech to not exploit people because the overarching system demands it. Unless you want people to do tech strictly for hobbies or whatever. The ONLY solution is to stop until we fix the overarching human-alignment problem. Everything else is a non-solution, merely an excuse to serve tech industry's continued interest.

noblessefemina,
@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

@stux You can't solve politics with AI because politics is a higher-level problem tied to philosophy. Sorry, but philosophers have spent millennia and they cannot solve this exact problem you think you can solve with programming. Maybe at the very least hear what they have to say first?

@noblessefemina@fosstodon.org avatar

As a tech enthusiast, I say this with deep respect toward technological innovation, with understanding and multitudes of self-reflection, but I have come to the conclusion that technology is very overrated. Most of the problems we have in this world is human made, willed by a handful number of human beings and enforced through systems of power. Technology simply acts as a tool or an amplifier and can never truly fix higher level problems like poverty, inequality, exploitation or injustice.

It’s kind of interesting seeing reporters slag off Mastodon for having low interaction and not being good when they follow 4 people, have 20 followers, and wrote two messages.

I think people have forgotten what it’s like to join a new social network, since people have been tied to other ones for years.

Trying to migrate from YouTube to PeerTube?

PeerTube Companion, a Firefox extension, will redirect you to a PeerTube version of a video, when trying to reach it from YouTube -- if it's available on PeerTube.

It's under heavy development, so use at your own risk.
