I am interested in two things:

  1. How the world works
  2. How we can make it better

My mission is to develop a deep understanding of how our world works — economically, politically, historically — and write to make it common knowledge.

I write wanting to address the problems in the world that keep us trapped in cycles of suffering.

I want to write a better world.

Quick Tulip update: Didn’t see her for a few days and started to worry since she getting up in years for an ant. Just spotted her in the lower chamber doing some patrolling around. She’s at least two years old. Still full of life. #namedAnts #tulip #ants #tuliptheant

Close up of Tulip, a very good looking ant: she has a wide head and six sturdy black legs.

@futurebird What are the pink spots on her? Is that a specific species of ant?

@futurebird That sounds really cool! What's her personality like? In what ways do they tend to differ?

@Daojoan @theindex You should consider switching over to another instance (for both the index and your main account).

These are a curated list of servers that adhere to a stricter set of requirements than the big ones like social and online, one of which being defederation with Meta.

So I'm keeping a list of things that are about to be gone or severely restricted (in the next 10 years) due to climate change, so far the list has been growing:

  • Avocadoes
  • Potatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Cocoa / Chocolate
  • Tomatoes
  • Salmon and pretty much all things from the ocean.
  • Mangoes (added by @337guanacos)
  • Almonds (added by @neverbeaten)

Anything more to add?

sashin,
@sashin@veganism.social avatar

@noblessefemina Why these things specifically? Is it because they take a lot of resources to grow?

Homo naledi is the most interesting new human like primate. They are from South Africa, little people. walked upright, but primates walking upright goes way back.

They had hands just like modern humans but longish arms and powerful shoulders ... so they could probably zip up a tree.

They have small brains half modern size. This has made people astonished that they may have had fire.

I'm glad I'll never meet one, a smart little firebug with powerful arms sounds terrifying. 1/

Wearing my fave boots & pants again. Both are super comfy & both are my fave colour - 😊

Side of backyard area is doing well! My cover crops mixes are choking out the fugly colonial non-native grass. I have native grasses in my homemade mixed cover crops mix. This area that I'm standing on was dead zone for years because of hard clay blocking plant growths. It took me 3 yrs to get soil healthy enough to grow more diversity!

I haven’t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants I’ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply aren’t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

When my get too ripe - I fry them up in coconut oil & eat with vanilla ice cream. I make fried bananas in a few different ways. This is the easiest/fastest version.

Asher also got his first few licks of ice cream today - he doesn't get much human foods at all(not good for his cat belly).

4 pieces of banana in frying pan, with coconut oil. Tops are nicely browned.
4 pieces of fried bananas with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream, on a plate.

There's this thing called Williams syndrome where people who have it tend to be very happy and outgoing and friendly, but it comes at a detriment because they can be TOO friendly and trusting and potentially end up in dangerous situations as a result.

I share a lot of the emotional and psychological traits, but I know I don’t have it because there are associated physical traits and I don’t have any of those.

Either way, there is definitely something going on with me where I am completely oblivious to any sort of threat or danger and, whenever my husband is concerned about a situation, he calls me "William" and I snap out of it.

He's not making fun of me or people with Williams syndrome and it's just kind of a code to alert me to potentially scary situations and I’m so grateful to have him around because I'd probably be dead or trapped in someone's basement if it weren't for him.

Williams syndrome for anyone interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_syndrome

Pro-Israel attackers, armed with sticks and other weapons, attack a Gaza solidarity encampment on the University of California, Los Angeles [UCLA] campus on Wednesday night [David Swanson/Reuters]

They used fireworks, irritant chemical sprays, poles made of metal and sticks made of wood – as well as fists and feet – and more than 100 students were injured, according to protest organisers, some of whom were admitted to hospital.

I was thinking about how I used to go backpacking with my mum and she was always adventurous and fun. One time we went to Chiang Rai together, she hung out with so many hippies and then when I was going to France shortly after she was like ‘oh I got their email you should email them’ and then I ended up staying in France with random people my mum talked to.

It tickles me that not everyone’s mums are like that

  1. Life is hard
  2. It's bad that life is hard
  3. We should make it less hard
sashin,
@sashin@veganism.social avatar
  1. The acute causes of the pain in life currently are material insecurity and high costs of living especially rent
  2. The deepest causes are capitalism, that the means of production, how we produce and distribute what we need to survive is privately owned and run for profit, a stable existence is made scarce to force most people into spending away their lives working jobs they wouldn't otherwise do, a meaningful existence seems scarcer still
