What's the lowest amount you've paid for something using a credit card?

Went to the market the other day and paid for a £2 punnet of fruit using a credit card. Guy was running Square on his phone, showed me the screen, I tapped, done.

I remember when everyone was £10 minimum for card payments, even in large shops. Now sole-traders can take instant payment for low value amounts. Brilliant!

@Edent 82p for some veg in the co-op the other day. Was ready for the cashier to tell me it had to be a £1 minimum, but they didn't bat an eyelid.

@Edent, something about €0.10 at Tesco.

@Edent £0.50 for a packet of tissues at boots, probably. But I think there are also much lower fees for "tap with phone or card" compared to using the actual credit/debit card part of the card (at least, in the UK)?

@Edent i think about 0.35€ a few days ago, not sure if it was the lowest ever, but pretty out there.

@Edent @adamchainz it’s one banana Terence how much could it cost

OliverC,

@alexhern @Edent @adamchainz At Trader Joe's in the US it would cost 19 cents. How come stuff is more expensive in the UK where pay rates are generally lower?

adamchainz,
@adamchainz@fosstodon.org avatar

@OliverC @alexhern @Edent This is a small local supermarket, they’re cheaper in larger ones. I always thought produce was more expensive in the US, I saw broccoli at $5 in a large supermarket, some years ago.

@OliverC
I imagine shipping is a major cost. Bananas in America will not have to travel as far.
Our cost of living isn't dramatically different once you account for the USA's expensive health costs.

@Edent 70p for a single stop train journey (many years ago). Recently, £1 for an iced bun at the local market.

There are still small businesses in my area that won't take cards though.

@Edent I regularly go in Tesco and buy a single banana for my toddler at 27p.

@adamchainz your toddler needs to stop being a freeloader and start buying their own bananas!

@Edent Square don't add a flat per-transaction fee; it's just 1.75%, so no problem with low value payments, your buying a £2 item would cost the merchant 3.5p
