The world of social media seems to have turned into a Russian Roulette-type game of “spin your online presence to pick the billionaire”. Apparently only some of the billionaires have a bullet aimed at you, but no-one knows how many or how long the delay before firing is. Is this really the best the world can do? (Yes, hooray for the fediverse, but without a centralised directory, it will never connect everyone to everyone).

@helenczerski
I only understand you are tired about thinking of privacy of people. Why does a directory helps you if everybody decides himself if he/ she is included ? I guess you respect this ? Or do you talk about huge data companys ( facebook, apple etc) that decides about privacy of each citizen ? You talk about russian roulette . Don't you think people are afraid about russian roulette with their privacy protection?

@enigma Directories can be opt-in. No-one is saying it has to be compulsory. But it should exist for those who want to be found.

@helenczerski
Why do you think it is missing when really everybody already has this opt-in ? Everybody can publish her/his name in her/ his account . Accounts can be searched and many here in Fedivers already name their account respectively. I know a bunch of local authorities. You yourself are the best example that this directory exist by using the search mechanism . So what next ?

Since you used in your profile I strongly admit I tell you nothing new with this official @fedilab link
https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/110655927461731839
It provides a directory. Also in your profile you published " The storm in the tea cup".
Because a fediverse directory isnot missing I guess you had just another " storm in your tea cup", right?

@helenczerski I've actually quite enjoyed not being connected to everyone.

This is down the list of what the world could be doing better right now.

@helenczerski Why do we even want everyone connected to everyone? Why is that important?

helenczerski,
@helenczerski@fediscience.org avatar

@aweatherall Because I want to learn from the widest pool of people possible, and if someone interesting is out there, I want to be able to follow them.

aweatherall,
@aweatherall@mastodon.social avatar

@helenczerski OK me too, but there are 8 billion of us, we simply can't be in touch with everyone. And we can get in touch with interesting people via hashtags, boosted toots and serendipity. I'm not sure how a directory helps.

@aweatherall A directory is how I find someone on the network if I saw them speak at an event, or read something they’d written, or heard someone else recommend them. It’s impossible to make the connections you want to make otherwise.

@helenczerski I take your point though but its a similar (though harder) problem as with twitter - someone's handle could be anything. They need to share their mastodon address on their website/presentation.
Many groups e.g. education keep directory lists and share them round as a separate concern
