I want to upgrade our TV from the existing 1080 x 720p, and I have 2 questions:

  1. Does anyone want a 1080 x 720p Sony Bravia TV (No stand, currently wall mounted)? Free to collect, can drop off if you have limited transport, and might pay for a stand if you need one and are cash poor :)

  2. Can anyone advise me what brand and model (50” max prolly, limited space) we should get? Not looking to spend $1000s. Choice seems to be between LG, Samsung, and Sony. All opinions gratefully received :)

@anathema_device @thomasbeagle Panasonic and LG sometimes share the same screen tech. Our Panasonic is good.

Is there a version of FourSquare / Swarm for the Fediverse?

I want to check in to a specific location and share that online. Not looking for badges and mayors etc.

Just a geotagged post saying "I am here".

aweatherall,

@Edent Pretty sure @slowe has built a client side location lookup that doesn't send your exact location to the server. Could perhaps build something with that to then post an openmaps link to a mastodon instance?

A while ago I made a little web app that re-presents a very static website in an app-like interface. This is private because it’s technically using copyrighted content (I own the book, FWIW, and the website version of the content is free to view).

I made this by scraping the content using the WordPress REST API and storing/serving the resulting JSON statically.

It’s effectively a simple headless content app! …

aweatherall,
@aweatherall@mastodon.social avatar

@ross Why are you saving the content as json? Are you not having to convert it to html to display it anyway?

I think I'm still in recovery from learning a few weeks ago that Canadian fossil fuel companies tell people that because it's "natural" gas that they produce, burning it can't hurt the environment. And people believe them. I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night, remember that and 🤯🤯🤯🤯

aweatherall,
@aweatherall@mastodon.social avatar

@helenczerski We've fallen for that "Natural gas" rubbish in the UK too. It's the whole greenwashing marketing strategy of the gas companies.
"Cleaner than coal", "less CO2", "greener", "cooking on natural gas" etc.

The curtain needs to be pulled down.

It's publication day for The Blue Machine in the US and Canada. Same book, with a different subtitle and miles in some places instead of km (but still mostly SI units, yay!).

If you're an ocean scientist and your family don't understand what you do and why, this might help.

"I love Helen Czerski’s writing, and this is her richest work yet—as clear as springwater, yet as filled with fascinating things as the ocean itself."- Sarah Bakewell

aweatherall,

@helenczerski I suppose thats a fun/tedious calculation exercise if nothing else.
They've remained incredibly stubborn on it. Although all their units are based on SI now anyway aren't they.
E.g. one inch = 0.0254 m

But mostly is was boring, aimless scrolling with occasional conspiracy theorists.

I genuinely appreciate the good stuff on other socials, but gosh it's impossible to curate.

It warms my heart to see so many lighthouses beaming out into the chilly night in the far north of the British Isles, near Orkney and the Shetlands.

But what are those two lighthouses due west of Orkney? I know of no land there. They're well north of the Hebrides.

It's also fun to see there's a lighthouse in the middle of Scotland! I think that one is on Loch Ness. But where, exactly?

None are shown on the west coast of Ireland, because that's not part of the UK. Alas, this map makes that region look dark and foresaken.

So you can see the details, I'm only showing you the top of this beautiful map made by @terence, The whole thing is here:

https://mathstodon.xyz/@terence@fosstodon.org/111132853426508413

aweatherall,
@aweatherall@mastodon.social avatar

@johncarlosbaez @Qazm To the west of that little bit is land not sea, hence no lighthouses.
That map shows Northern Ireland a province of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK and goes way west and south (down past Wales) of that bit on the map.
