Last night, I forgot to activate my alarm… So I woke up at around 5am. Then I took my time, but it felt good to go outside (almost 10 C), and I‘ll never get how long I endured the old wheels on my rower, now that I have the comparison. Have a great weekend, y‘all!

@sebastianhahn Oh dear. Luckily I have the cats (the dug is too polite) who insist on a 6am breakfast and my partner agrees - yes they need a 6 am breakfast, just not for me, so….

@sebastianhahn waking up at 5 AM and feeling that it’s late…🙄

I know all things are relative and it IS later for you, but my night owl sensibilities struggle to relate.

@mlawton For a missed alarm it wasn‘t late. This holiday week I usually got up around that time. That‘s roughly 90-100 minutes more sleep than usual. I LOVE IT.

@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@sebastianhahn I don’t like going to sleep, but I don’t like getting up either. I can definitely appreciate some extra sleep.

WTL,
@WTL@mastodon.social avatar

@mlawton @sebastianhahn I look forward to bedtime. 🤣

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@WTL @sebastianhahn Wholly alien to me. It’s a dress rehearsal for dying, performed every single night. 😵

sebastianhahn,
@sebastianhahn@mastodon.world avatar

@mlawton @WTL No, it unlocks the slumbering potential of fantasy in our minds. A place and time where the usual rules don‘t apply. It’s gorgeous. (Even though I have to admit that most nights I sleep like a dead body…, which could be used to support your point of view.)

@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@sebastianhahn @WTL maybe we are only really awake in our dreams. By day, we are imprisoned in a rigid reality that limits our very nature. 🤣

I don’t actually dread sleep as I might my mortality, but I do sometimes feel I’m “giving up on the day” and delay it. Night time is my time, where my obligations are complete and I can do whatever I want. Often that comes with a self-sabotaging component where I get too little sleep. Finding the balance is a struggle.

bomkatt,
@bomkatt@ohai.social avatar

@mlawton @sebastianhahn @WTL this may or may not be a factor for you: there’s a trend where people stay up too late because so much of their day is taken up by obligations.

I catch myself doing it sometimes, and I love to sleep.

@mlawton @sebastianhahn @WTL alternatively, a good friend of mine is just hard-wired to think well in the middle of the night. She hates being forced to adjust her schedule to a day job

@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@bomkatt @sebastianhahn @WTL both replies are huge contributing factors for me. I’m naturally a night owl & find my energy levels increase from early evening onward. I used to code late at night & would be at peak creativity between midnight and 3:00 AM. Wrecked me in the mornings though, so that’s out now. Unhealthy & not sustainable.

And my revenge bedtime procrastination is very real. Combine them & it’s difficult to align with “normal” schedules.

@mlawton @bomkatt @sebastianhahn I was a night owl from my teenage years into my mid-forties, and experience the same creative peak in the dead of night. The changeover to being a “morning person" happened when I really started running and didn't want to die in Ottawa heat.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@WTL @bomkatt @sebastianhahn I know I’m somewhat adaptable, but how much is in question.

In high school, I had to be up at 0445 to get to hockey practice, dressed and on the ice by 0530.

After college I was a radio news reporter/anchor for a rural Indiana AM radio station. Up at 0430 for the 45 min commute and to write up the overnight beat.

I did alright with those early commitments, but they definitely aren’t my natural rhythm.

@mlawton @bomkatt @sebastianhahn @WTL

I have to confess it is the other way round. An early morning run sets me up so delightfully that I gravitated to dawn if not earlir and an earlier bed time.

My partner likes it - I feed the cats, take the dogs out and am back to make her coffee.

@mlawton @sebastianhahn I used to share the same “giving up on the day mindset”. It's very interesting to me how my mindset has shifted to looking forward to wrapping the day up and getting well-earned rest.

Admittedly, I don't think much about my mortality. From my perspective, at some point in the future, I will no longer be, so I have to do my best today.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@WTL @sebastianhahn maybe I will adapt similarly.

It’s funny, the older I get, the less my mortality affects me. Used to freak me right out when I was younger.

Now? Sort of the same as you describe. One day it will happen. Not much I can do except try to appreciate everything in the moments I have.

@mlawton @WTL @sebastianhahn

I think I have been fairly consistent. From my late teens life was dangerous (my choices) and although not unduly reckless it was not a great worry.

Bit more careful when the kids were growing back, and now careful and reasonable complacent. What happens will happen and if I have done my best to minimise silly risk, that is it.

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@Wen @WTL @sebastianhahn That's a good perspective. I think a lot of it is fully and truly accepting a complete lack of control. That's really hard.

And some deaths seem so random and happenstance. My friend's coworker was in incredible shape and died of a heart attack after he got back from a run. 8 years younger than me. Those are hard to process because it feels like they were doing things right. Sometimes things don't make sense.

@mlawton @WTL @sebastianhahn

It could probably occur at any time. But although I think being fit will probably extend my life, I am sure it will extend my enjoyable life.

@mlawton 🤣
