@Virginicus Even critically lauded authors -- John Brunner comes to mind -- periodically had to take second jobs to make a living. It took him too long to write his best work so he had to return to cranking crap out to pay the bills.

@Virginicus Silverberg is the best example. He invested early profits and made quite a bit of money as a result.
