History PhD. Joachim Boaz maps the more esoteric inclines and declines of science fiction between 1945-1985. When SF tackles the greater morass of things and our oblique interiors he is happy. His website Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations charts these movements. https://sciencefictionruminations.com/

I represented thousands of criminal defendants in multiple jurisdictions. I can only remember two falling asleep (even for a moment) in court.

This is more astounding than most people will realize.

@seth.abramson And for all you know those two probably had undiagnosed narcolepsy....

Jesustitsfucksake. Just saw the photo of Indictment Spice sleeping in court and he looks like the goddamned Corinthian!

@KateOfMind I think the image going around is doctored (if we're referring to the same one). But yeah, he appeared to doze -- https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/15/nyregion/trump-asleep-criminal-trial.html

What pre-1985 science fiction are you reading?

Now a column and reading/writing update on my site: https://sciencefictionruminations.com/2024/04/15/what-pre-1985-science-fiction-are-you-reading-update-no-xi/

@curmudgeonaf Haha. I mean, yeah, it was written in 1949.

SFRuminations,
@SFRuminations@wandering.shop avatar

@pyperkub Not a series for me due to my general dislike of pulp and space opera. But if it fit one of the historical topics I was researching, I'd read more than I have already.

My site is my primary SF discussion forum. It's moderated and my happy place.

SFRuminations,
@SFRuminations@wandering.shop avatar

@pyperkub Well, there's no need to apologize for it. You are talking to a historian (I have a high tolerance when it comes to primary sources). I naturally think historically when it comes to SF -- hence my pre-1985 date. I am interested in American history from right before WWII to around when I get tired of a world of Reagan and Thatcher. hah

SFRuminations,
@SFRuminations@wandering.shop avatar

@pyperkub For me--thinking historically--it's not about viewing with tolerance. It's about understanding what SF can say about that the moment in which is was written and the views that people had at that time -- the good, the bad, and everything in between.

@Kierkegaanks very much an author of my youth -- I have not returned to him and don't plan on it, at the moment.

@Kierkegaanks I know. I’ve read it!
