“Often forgotten are the Japanese Americans who lived in Hawaii and were also forced from their homes and imprisoned in Hawaii and on the U.S. mainland.
Their forced relocation and incarceration has been largely omitted from the dominant narrative of Japanese American internment in the U.S. during World War II.”

@TheConversationUS I grew up in Waipahu, as did my father (b 1907). He would remark about the camp in Honouliuli Gulch, that that was where AJAs who were religious, political, unionists, or considered leaders were imprisoned by the US. He never considered them traitors or threats. On Dec 7, after the attack, after frightened phone calls, he told his family there would be no mass incarceration because plantation business trumps racial fear, and AJAs constituted the majority of the plantation labor force in Hawai'i. Not so for Mainland AJAs. My mom's Waialua father was a significant figure (he designed, engineered, and led construction of the sugar plantation aqueduct), and Oahu Sugar Co vouched for and protected him from imprisonment. My dad happened also to have been strafed by a Zero on his way in to work in Wahiawa from Waipahu on Kamehameha Hwy. It peeled off from the attack on Wheeler, as he was the only car on the road Sunday morning to chase him. The bullets hit the asphalt missing him, but the plane was so close he made eye contact with the pilot. He saw surprise on the pilot's face when he saw my Dad looked like him, and stopped shooting.

There's nothing quite like Steely Dan's album to simultaneously bring your spirits up (because it's a fantastic album) and sink you back down (because you just know no matter how much you practice, you will never achieve that level of sheer perfection).

If I had only one album to bring with me to a desert island in the middle of nowhere, Aja would be it.
