Dev versions of #ModemManager now support #GPS without a SIM card. Consumers of the MM API need some changes for this, so I submitted pull requests to #Geoclue (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/geoclue/geoclue/-/merge_requests/173), gnss-share (https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/gnss-share/-/merge_requests/15), and my own simple #GNSS app Satellite (https://codeberg.org/tpikonen/satellite/releases) (all 3 in different languages).

Soon it will be possible to use SIMless mobile phones for things like navigation and fitness tracking.

After being kneecapped by a #patents troll years ago, #Mozilla Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected #WiFi SSIDs), is now shutting down: https://github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/issues/2065

MLS was how #GeoClue could get a meters-accurate location without a #GPS receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many #GNOME / #KDE apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on #Linux laptops.

Dass #Geoclue und damit u.a. auch Gnome und Firefox häufiger annehmen, ich würde mich in der Nähe von #Würzburg befinden, obwohl ich in Hannover bin: Geschenkt.
