A third Chinese company files with the ITU to launch a 10,000 satellite mega-constellation into low Earth orbit (LEO) - https://spacenews.com/chinese-firm-files-plans-for-10000-satellite-constellation/

If all these LEO operators actually launch their constellations, it’s gonna get pretty crowded up there!

The UN needs to step in.

@brianstorms The ITU (a UN agency) is definitely having all of this LEO activity on their radar, but they work on a very long timeframe.

Q - do you know of well-researched articles, or academic papers, that explore the risks to the Internet’s infrastructure due to climate change?

I.e. how do we keep the Internet functioning in the midst of extreme weather and other aspects of climate change? For example, if sea levels rise, what will that do to subsea cable landing stations?

I am building a list of articles and papers, and I have some.. but am looking for more.

Thanks!

@danyork nothing fancy. Elevation via topography or building, eg, ground floor has no M&E. Similar to what you see in tsunami risk zones already.

Of course, you can only survive without power for so long....

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dsc That makes sense. And yes, funny thing about needing power. 🙁

It's very disappointing that potentially as many as 60 million US citizens may lose their affordable Internet access because the US Congress has politicized things and so far failed to act:

What's going with the Internet in western and southern Africa right now?

A lot of the region is currently experiencing Internet outages. @radar and IODA are both tracking the outages:

(hat tip to @dbelson for his great CloudflareRadar work!)

There are multiple reports on Twitter/X about "subsea cable cuts" from telecom companies... but even they are not definitive.

Anyone seeing clear statements?

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@dbelson @radar Yes, this article came out related to Nigeria... but again it is recycling the Vodacom and MTN posts that came out earlier today: https://nairametrics.com/2024/03/14/breaking-undersea-cable-damage-causes-internet-outage-in-nigeria-telcos-banks-hit/

Nothing new or more specific.

danyork,
@danyork@mastodon.social avatar

@cybeardjm @dbelson Thanks for all that info. Useful to see what they are saying. (Although again no specifics beyond problems with undersea cables.)

A major factor in closing the digital divide is creating more reliable Internet access that is affordable. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) and local traffic are critical to help with this.

Over the past 10 years in the DRC, we can see the dramatic impact that IXPs had on access⬇️
