Quick note about ethics: Just because you can, it doesn't mean you should. Get permission before you try to break something. Don't go too far.

Data encryption made easy

Presented by Sam Sehnert

Encryption in Laravel is pretty easy, but how can you make it easier? Let's find out!

Privacy & Security are a legal requirement in Australia and New Zealand.

It may be a regulatory requirement... but we also have a social responsibility to keep our users safe, and we don't know what data will be dangerous for our user.

Only let a user access what they need to.

Tapping into the power of junior developers

Presented by Rissa Jackson

image/jpeg

shane,

Senior developers have a role to play in encouraging junior developers.

But why should you hire junior devs?

shane,

Junior developers have fresh perspectives and it's worth encouraging them to speak up.

"It didn't work when we tried it last time."

Why don't you try it again?

Companies change. Situations change. And with the energy and excitement of junior devs ... the result might be different this time.

shane,

Mentorship helps everyone

Also consider the bus factor / lottery factor. It's not just seniors mentoring juniors... but employees helping each other to understand.

shane,

Different ways to refer to those with disabilities, and each person has their own preferences.

shane,

Blind people don't drive. But they might research and pay for a vehicle for the family online.

Also blindness isn't the only disability.

shane,

The game industry has made huge moves towards better accessibility in recent years.

Games are complicated.

So we as web developers don't have an excuse.

Forza does a good job. Here's some others...

Writing Native Apps in PHP

by @marcelpociot

image/jpeg

shane,

NativePHP is a thin layer over Electron

Supports Windows, Mac and Linux.
Supports using a database.

@marcelpociot

image/jpeg

shane,

Add NativePHP to a new or existing project

Hot reloading is enabled, so changes are reflected in the app immediately during development.

@marcelpociot

image/jpeg
image/jpeg

shane,

NativePHP gives access to system features, like Touch ID on Mac

Access the clipboard, including text or images.

You can also access printers and Bluetooth devices connected to the machine.

You can use whatever you want - Livewire, Inertia, Blade. It just works.

Just catching up now on talks. After watching @taylor's keynote I can't help but chuckle to myself that we're back to writing PHP code above html/blade in single file page templates.

(I'm not saying it's bad, volt and folio look pretty great for lots of use cases, and are clearly an improvement from old school vanilla PHP spaghetti templates.)

My Laracon US talk is now up! 😁
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBJStg-KMlU

Watch as we hack into a (intentionally) vulnerable app, exploiting a bunch of weaknesses, and learning how to think like a hacker along the way. If you can think like a hacker, you can better protect your own apps!

I wrote a very long and emotional thread over on Twitter, I wanted to share it here but I'm about to fly home, so:
https://twitter.com/valorin/status/1682498273221951489

tl;dr: A rude password was selected during my talk, it was from an audience member and my code wasn't supposed to display it. I should have changed it or said something to clarify it wasn't supposed to be shown, but I didn't...
