Welcome to another #RailwaysExplained thread... a while back I asked for ideas and @DiegoBeghin suggested something on AC versus DC electrification. So here goes!
Welcome to another #RailwaysExplained thread... a brand new one this time. A couple of weeks back @chris asked about specific challenges in electrifying railways in mountainous and forested terrain.
Lets first take a look at what characteristics mountain railways have which differentiate them from lowland ones...
Welcome to another #RailwaysExplained thread… this is my first completely new thread on Mastodon, and boy is it going to be an epic one.
HOW IT WORKS (AND WHEN IT DOESN’T) – DISCONTINUOUS ELECTRIFICATION
Something I get asked about A LOT is discontinuous electrification. A typical comment on social media will be something like “well with battery technology so readily available we can just electrify the easy bits and run on battery in between…”
Railfans and railway professionals of Mastodon:
If you want to learn fascinating stuff about overhead line equipment and traction current ⚡ - a field of the railway system I don't know much about - do follow @25kV and make sure not to miss his excellent #RailwaysExplained threads he's gradually bringing to Mastodon: 👇 https://mas.to/@25kV/110962276174171304
Another #RailwaysExplained thread... this one is another port over from the Site We Don't Mention. More to come!
HOW IT WORKS - SPARK GAPS AND SURGE ARRESTERS
One of the things that I spent a lot of time on back in 2019 was sourcing good quality images for the #OLEbook - getting the more obscure stuff from publicly accessible places was quite hard.
That's why I had to go all the way to North East England to hunt down this Spark Gap on the Tyne & Wear Metro
Hi all! I'm Garry, I'm a #railway engineer based in the UK specialising in the overhead line systems that supply power to #electric trains. I'm so convinced that electric rail is the future that I wrote a book about how it works - you can download it FREE at https://www.ocs4rail.com/downloads. I also post the odd #RailwayPhotos#RailwayPhotography . I'm going to be moving all my #RailwaysExplained threads over here and doing some new ones too
