Today in Labor History March 4, 1998: In Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services, Inc., the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that federal laws banning sexual harassment in the workplace also apply when both parties are the same sex. Joseph Oncale had been subjected to repeated sexual harassment by male coworkers on a Chevron Oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico.

The findings appear to largely substantiate the investigation of the #NYAG, #LetitiaJames, who concluded that Cuomo had sexually harassed 11 women, amid a culture of #fear & #intimidation.
#Cuomo, who denied having sexually harassed anyone, resigned in Aug 2021, shortly after the release of #LetitiaJames’s report.
Since his departure, #AndrewCuomo has engaged in a multipronged campaign to discredit the report & James as being politically motivated, & has been slowly maneuvering toward re-entering political life.
#AndrewCuomo’s efforts may be sharply compromised by the findings, which determined he repeatedly subjected #women who worked for him to unwelcome #sexual contact, comments & looks, & gave preferential treatment to some based on their physical appearance.
The report adds that staff enabled him & retaliated against some who complained. The #DOJ characterized the response as being “designed only to protect #Cuomo from further accusations, rather than to protect employees from #SexualHarassment.”
