I have to say this is my new number one favorite explainer video about Proportional Representation and Single Transferable Voting:

https://www.vox.com/videos/24091275/why-us-elections-only-give-you-two-choices

(my previous go-to video was by the inimitable CGP Grey, and it's still great if you want more details about the mechanics of STV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8XOZJkozfI)

Is it too much to say that the idea of allowing government agencies to take unaccountable "charitable" donations is a step too far?

What about when they use it to unaccountably purchase weapons to attack civilians?

The argument for no taxation without representation is that taxes were a gift to the king. We're already doing charity.

Make the billionaires pay it in taxes instead.

The fascists are trying to lock in the system permanently, by eliminating the only non-violent way out of the two-party ratchet that we have now.

They want to ban ranked choice voting. Don't let them. Demand Single Transferable Vote.

(instant runoff is not a good way to do RCV; STV works the way people intuitively expect ranked-choice votes to work.)

For that person going around saying, "if voting did anything, they'd try to ban it":

THEY ARE TRYING TO BAN IT.

You know what would really screw up the fascist strategy?

Single Transferable Vote.

Great news that the tool is now under the management of a worker-owned software coop called Cohere! OpaVote is an easy-to-use website that lets you host online. I can't count how many elections I've administered via this excellent tool as part of my advocacy for democratic reforms like and in particular. Congrats to @Zee, @anaulin and the team!

Staggering city and county council elections is what we do here in and , and people claim to like it because of more institutional memory and continuity. But really, how many incumbents get booted anyway? I find that a dumb argument to be worried that the whole council might be replaced in a single year.

Much better to elect the whole council at the same time, but do it via a system like .

Too bad the commission went with their feelings about how works, rather than listening to their voting methods research committee, who had done the homework and recommended . Now we've got the business association's pet conservative electeds proposing to make 3 proportional seats per district into 2 single-winner elections, where RCV/IRV will deliver status quo results and money-talks manufactured consent, like it has for 100 years.🙄

@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

STV , while not terrible, is not as representational of group consensus as proportional star voting, but the single-winner version (recently branded RCV or IRV) does not give good representative results.
