(my previous go-to video was by the inimitable CGP Grey, and it's still great if you want more details about the mechanics of STV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8XOZJkozfI)
Staggering city and county council elections is what we do here in #BellinghamWA and #WhatcomCounty, and people claim to like it because of more institutional memory and continuity. But really, how many incumbents get booted anyway? I find that a dumb argument to be worried that the whole council might be replaced in a single year.
Too bad the #Portland#CharterReview commission went with their feelings about how #RankChoice works, rather than listening to their voting methods research committee, who had done the homework and recommended #STARvoting. Now we've got the business association's pet conservative electeds proposing to make 3 proportional seats per district into 2 single-winner elections, where RCV/IRV #RankedChoice will deliver status quo results and money-talks manufactured consent, like it has for 100 years.🙄
STV #SingleTransferableVote, while not terrible, is not as representational of group consensus as proportional star voting, but the single-winner version (recently branded RCV or IRV) does not give good representative results.
