(my previous go-to video was by the inimitable CGP Grey, and it's still great if you want more details about the mechanics of STV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8XOZJkozfI)
Of course we think the bad guys only win elections by cheating, when we aren't aware of the bad stuff the people we're told are the good guys, do. And obviously this story is even easier to sell regarding countries we know less about than our own. The level of American belief in good guys and bad guys is both adorable and so dangerous. #LiberalValues
people need to want a better understanding of what's happening and be able to honestly talk about it in good faith. and then vote for the best option even when you see lots of problems with that candidate. and support reforms like decentralization and direct funding of media and #RankedChoiceVoting so that we can have better options that can win next time.
The GOP are not becoming the worker party. #MAGA offers nothing like universal health care or better working conditions. It still wants to shift the tax burden (or debt) more towards middle/lower income Americans than the wealthy. The problem is Democratic leaders now care less about workers than used to, even though more Dems than GOP still do. So Dem promises rarely become law even when they do have power, and GOP attacks on Dems as being lying elitists ring more true. https://pca.st/episode/64562c7c-46d1-4bcd-84a8-071559083940
neither party is very liberal at this point. elected GOPs still claim Trump won while being fine claiming victory with votes from those tainted or illegal ballots. Trump went after Assange when Obama wouldn't. Greenwald has been repeatedly pointing out how the right has completely flipped on free speech now that it's anti Israel voices that need defending.
I want a left liberal party. It doesn't exist. I'll go barely left illiberal over right illiberal till we get #RankedChoiceVoting.
“Those are the two choices. It's kind of like, one is old and effective and compassionate, has a heart, and really cares about people. And one is old and has been charged with 91 felonies.
"I don't understand why this is even a hard choice."
she's right about voting in a general but can you then admit that the duopoly means corporations only need to also corrupt the Democratic primary system to make any progress slow to a crawl? #RankedChoiceVoting
I remember in 2009 when the public option and Medicare expansion fell down and died. Lots of people every day since died who might have lived. Remembering them and their families this morning.
Biden promised a public option in 2020. #Medicare4All is still popular, even among Republicans. anybody remember #ForceTheVote? many more Dems (in addition to all Republicans afaik) are to blame for this than just Lieberman.
and what really sucks is the strategy of still voting Dem where it matters makes sense, no matter how many times they side with donors and people die, go bankrupt and our economy remains less competitive. kill the duopoly. #RankedChoiceVoting
I did not say that. I actually said the opposite. I just trust people to hear annoying truths and still do the right thing, even if it doesn't feel as good. it's necessary even.
"and what really sucks is the strategy of still voting Dem where it matters makes sense, no matter how many times they side with donors and people die, go bankrupt and our economy remains less competitive. kill the duopoly. #RankedChoiceVoting"
Frustrating article that makes good points about the flaws in the nonpartisan top-two primary system, but doesn't mention reforms that would fix it. In passing it says "Alaska has its own variation" of a non-partisan primary, but that variation (#RankedChoiceVoting) fixes all the problems listed in this article!
Yesterday the Fair Representation Act was re-introduced in Congress! This reform will stop gerrymandering and make the House of Representatives more competitive and more responsive to voters.
